The Bullets, Part 1: Canelo, Cotto, PacMan, Golovkin & Much More

cotto88888By Kevin Pasquale: In my previous article for this site, I waxed poetic on the “who, why, and what if” on Money & Manny finally getting in the ring together. If that fight comes to pass, then there will be more to say at that time—maybe enough to write another article.

But moving in a different direction, let’s do this: A bunch of bullets & random thoughts on boxing. Easy to read, and better yet, we can look at a lot of stuff in a minimum of time. So, to begin:

· – Hate to start on a negative note, but wow, what is up with Jermain Taylor?

Six of the best: Top Boxer of 2014?

golovkin94By Gav Duthie: With the year drawing to a close I ask who was the king of the ring for 2014? It has been far from a blockbuster calendar year but it has seen some great performances, some new blood start to make a name for themselves and some solid comebacks. Based on level of performances, ring activity and the quality of opponents these are my 6 of the best.

6. Gennady Golovkin 31-0 (28) – The train keeps rolling through

With a lack of top class fights available at middleweight Golovkin’s philosophy is to remain active. Despite postponing dates in the early part of he year due to a family bereavement GGG has fought three times in 2014. He started the campaign with a much expected win over the durable Osumano Adamo in 7 rounds. Towards the second half of the campaign the Kazakhstan sensation faced two opponents that were said to be stern tests which he passed with ease.

Abel Sanchez: Canelo will fight Golvokin, Cotto will not

bengggabel102813By Jesse James: Abel Sanchez, the head trainer of WBA “Super” and WBC interim Middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, believes Canelo Alvarez will fight Golovkin if he beats Cotto. Sanchez believes Cotto will not fight Golovkin if he wins. Canelo has stated multiple times he will fight Golovkin and isn’t afraid, even Oscar De la Hoya stated that Canelo is indeed interested and that fight is a possibility next year.

As for Miguel Cotto the current WBC and lineal Middleweight champion, there hasn’t been much interest in fighting Golovkin next providing that he beats Canelo sometime next year. The only talk of a Golovkin bout came from his trainer Freddie Roach.

Golovkin/Ward Forget It

ward5636By Diarmuid Sherry: Anyone who has mattered at 168lbs, Andre Ward has beaten. Carl Froch, Mikkel Kessler, Arthur Abraham, Sakio Bika and recent challenger Edwin Rodriguez were all outfoxed by the superior Ward. Former Light Heavyweight Champion, Chad Dawson found that dropping the 7lbs to fight at Super Middleweight too difficult to cope with, and lost to a rare Ward knockout.

Ward was left with a choice, either stay at Super Middleweight and churn over any remaining challengers, or move a division north, and chase the big names in Light Heavyweight. He chose the former.

Floyd Sr doesn’t want Mayweather to fight Golovkin

floyd6333By Allan Fox: Trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr doesn’t want his son WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr (47-0, 26 KOs) to face WBA Super middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (31-0, 28 KOs), because he sees Golovkin as having too much size on him for Mayweather Jr to fight him.

Floyd Sr notes that Golovkin melts down from the 170s to get down to 160 to make weight at middleweight for his fights. Floyd Sr says that Mayweather Jr fights in the low 140s, and he’s be giving up too much weight to face the 170+ Golovkin.

Canelo wants to fight Golovkin, says De La Hoya

canelo084t6By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya is saying that former WBA/WBC 154 pound champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) is interested in facing WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, and that he’s not afraid of fighting him. De La Hoya says that the red-haired Canelo isn’t afraid of fighting anyone.

De La Hoya doesn’t appear to be ready to press the button to make the Canelo-Golovkin fight happen just yet. He wants to match Canelo against WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto next in early 2015, because he feels that’s the biggest fight in boxing right now.

Golovkin vs. Murray: Should Gennady move up once he beats Martin?

golovkin8by Oliver Norager – IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (31-0, 28 KOs) faces the durable, but limited Martin Murray (29-1-1, 12 KOs) on the 21 of February in Monte Carlo. This is actually a decent fight for the hard punching Golovkin. Murray is a decent operator with a tight defense, so getting Murray out of his misery early will prove something to the public, because neither Felix Sturm or Sergio Martinez were able to get him out of there, but they don’t have the power that Golovkin has.

Once Murray starts feeling Golovkin punches he will get into survival mode, so expect a blowout in the middle rounds once Murray feels that he can’t compete with the likes of Golovkin.
