Golovkin wants Mayweather fight

golovkin1By Allan Fox: WBA Super World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs) will be fighting Marco Antonio Rubio (59-6-1, 51 KOs) this Saturday night on HBO. But that’s not the fight that Golovkin is looking for.

Before Golovkin retires someday, he would like to face boxing’s biggest star in Floyd Mayweather Jr, according to his trainer Abel Sanchez. Fighting Mayweather has been a dream of Golovkin’s for some time now, but that dream is about to expire in the near future due to Mayweather nearing the end of his career.

“I think that’s Gennady’s dream fight [against Mayweather]. If it happens, great. If it doesn’t happen, we’re still going to have a great career,” said Sanchez to esnewsreporting.com.

Golovkin will still have a sensational career whether Mayweather fights him or not, but it would definitely help Golovkin get to the next level if Mayweather would give him a break by agreeing to fight him.

The only way Mayweather vs. Golovkin happens is if Mayweather runs out of opposition, and if Golovkin is willing to fight him at 154. Mayweather will likely ask Golovkin to come down in weight to junior middleweight for that fight to happen. It would show a lot of courage on Mayweather’s part to fight a guy as good as Golovkin.

Fighters like Miguel Cotto and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez aren’t stepping forward to take on Golovkin, and both of them are a lot closer to Golovkin’s weight class than Mayweather.

Canelo actually weighs the same as Golovkin after he rehydrates for his fights at junior middleweight, yet Canelo hasn’t shown any interest in taking on Golovkin. Mayweather could shame both Cotto and Canelo if he were to step up and take on Golovkin before either of them.

It’s not probable that Mayweather will elect to fight Golovkin. Mayweather is nearing the end of his career, and he’s not going to take a risky fight against Golovkin when he’s able to make $30+ million per fight against guys like Marcos Maidana and Robert Guerrero. Mayweather doesn’t need to take risks for him to make good money.
