Image: Hearn wants Golovkin for Kell Brook at catch-weight of 157By Scott Gilfoid: Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn is taking the shotgun approach to trying to get his fighter IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (35-0, 24 KOs) a big money fight for the summer. Hearn has targeted the following fighters for Brook for the 32,000 seat Bramall Lane in Sheffield: Gennady Golovkin, Manny Pacquiao vs. Tim Bradley winner, Miguel Cotto, Danny Garcia and Jessie Vargas.

Hearn says the fighters he wants the most for Brook is Pacquiao and Bradley. He would also like Cotto, as he says HBO approached him about fighting Cotto on June 18, but he thinks Cotto is interested in fighting someone else. As for the Golovkin fight, Hearn says he spoke with Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler about the two fighters facing each other at a catch-weight of 157lbs.

Will Mayweather come back for Golovkin fight?

Floyd MayweatherBy Chris Williams: In recent months, Floyd Mayweather Jr. has been mentioning IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin’s name quite a big to the media, and one gets the sense that if Mayweather does choose to come back to the sport in 2016 or 2017, he’s almost surely going to be selecting the Kazahstan fighter to go after his 50th win.

Mayweather has always been the type of fighter who wants to get the biggest name possible for his fights, and there’s none bigger than Golovkin right now. Mayweather wouldn’t be able to shake up the boxing world if he were to return to the sport to fight the likes of Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Amir Khan, Keith Thurman, Kell Brook or Manny Pacquiao.

Tyson Fury picks Saunders to beat Golovkin

fury434By Dan Ambrose: Heavyweight champion Tyson Fury believes WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders (23-0, 12 KOs) will be IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) when/if they face each other in 2016 in a unification match.

Fury believes that if he was able to defeat Wladimir Klitschko in a fight where everyone doubted him, then Saunders will be able to do the same thing by beating Golovkin. Fury says he’s betting that the 26-year-old Saunders will get past Golovkin if this fight goes down.

Canelo’s message to GGG

1-DSC07313By Dan Ambrose: WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez addressed WBC mandatory challenger Gennady “GGG” Golovkin directly during an interview this week, telling GGG that he’ll “eventually” get the fight against him, but it’s going to take time.

It’s unknown if Canelo is speaking in code by saying that it’ll eventually happen, which could be code for ‘it’s not going to happen in 2016, buddy.’ We’re going to see how serious Canelo is in wanting to defend his WBC middleweight title against Golovkin, because Canelo is going to need to make a decision about the Golovkin fight 15 days after his next title defense against Amir Khan on May 7.

Loeffler: Saunders an option for GGG if no Canelo or Khan fight

saunders43By Jeff Aranow: Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions says WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders is an option for his fighter IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin if he can’t get the winner of the May 7 fight between WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Amir Khan.

That’s the first priority for Golovkin because he wants the fight against the winner of the Canelo vs. Khan fight so that he has a chance to win the WBC 160lb title inside the ring rather than picking it up from the World Boxing Council stripping Canelo or Khan of the WBC belt for them having failed to face Golovkin.

“We would still be very interested in a fight there with Saunders,” Loeffler said to skysports.com. “If [Canelo or Khan] doesn’t happen, for whatever reason, then Saunders would be at the top of our list to unify the middleweight division. Gennady is the type of fighter that doesn’t care where he fights.”

Golovkin’s promoter says Khan could be a target

Image: Golovkin’s promoter says Khan could be a targetBy Dan Ambrose: Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) could find himself in the target sights of unbeaten IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) in the very near future if Khan pulls off a huge upset of WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) on May 7 in their fight on HBO pay-per-view in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Golovkin is the WBC mandatory challenger, and it’s already been mandated by the World Boxing Council that the WBC middleweight champion must face Golovkin next. This means that whoever holds the WBC 160lb title will be in the hot seat and will need to face Golovkin next.

Saunders wants Golovkin fight at Wembley Stadium

saunders67By Scott Gilfoid: WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders (23-0, 12 KOs) is eying a big summer showdown with IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) at Wembley Stadium in London, UK. For that fight to have a realistic chance of taking place, Saunders will need to successfully defend his WBO title next month against #11 WBO challenger Max Bursak (32-4-1, 5, 15 KOs) on BoxNation on April 30 at the Copper Box Arena in London, UK.

That shouldn’t be a problem for Saunders, but you never know. Saunders can’t punch and he’s really little more than a six-round fighter. We’ve seen Saunders’ lack of stamina at play recently in his fights against Chris Eubank Jr. and Andy Lee.

It doesn’t look like the 26-year-old Saunders is improving in the stamina department unfortunately, and you have to figure that this is going to be a career-long thing for him.

Golovkin needs an impressive performance against Wade

Image: Golovkin needs an impressive performance against WadeBy Jeff Aranow: IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) needs an impressive performance in his fight against challenger Dominic Wade (18-0, 12 KOs) on April 23 to help increase interest in a summer fight against WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders, because the British are going to be watching Golovkin’s fight against Wade on BoxNation.

I know that Golovkin would like to fight WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez next, but that fight cannot happen until later this year in September possibly. Canelo has a fight on May 7 against Amir Khan, and after that fight, Canelo will want to rest and take it easy for a number of months while he heals up.

Why we won’t see Golovkin-Saunders

golovkinBy Gav Duthie: In a brief conversation involving Steve ‘Big Daddy’ Bunce and Frank Warren before the Flanagan-Matthews title fight the latter admitted that Billy Joe Saunders wanted to fight Gennady Golovkin next.

Last week it was announced that that Saunders will make a voluntary defence against Max Bursak for his newly acquired WBO middleweight title. Bursak is a solid fighter with good experience but is certainly not a name that will excite the fans.

Golovkin will only fight Canelo at 160, says Sanchez

Image: Golovkin will only fight Canelo at 160, says SanchezBy Dan Ambrose: Abel Sanchez, the trainer for Gennady Golovkin, says WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez only has one options available to him if he wants to keep his WBC middleweight title after his May 7th fight against Amir Khan. If Canelo is still in possession of his WBC title, then he’ll need to decide whether he wants to fight #1 WBC mandatory challenger Golovkin at the full weight of 160lbs or not.

If Canelo chooses to try and push a catch-weight of 155lbs on Golovkin, Sanchez says that they will not agree to that. Canelo will then either have to vacate his WBC title or get stripped of it for failing to defend it against Golovkin at the full weight.
