16 days until Golovkin-Wade

Image: 16 days until Golovkin-WadeBy Dan Ambrose: The long awaited match between IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) and Dominic Wade (18-0, 12 KOs) is only 16 days away for their fight on April 23 on HBO from the Forum in Inglewood, California.

This is one of those rare fights where both guys are going into the match undefeated. Wade, 25, is a lot younger than the 34-year-old Golovkin, but his youth isn’t necessarily a good thing in this case.

Dominic Wade ready for Gennady Golovkin

1-golovkin-wade (10)By Jeff Aranow: Unbeaten #3 IBF Dominic Wade (18-0, 12 KOs) will be facing IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) in less than three weeks from now on April 23 on HBO Championship Boxing from the Forum in Inglewood, California.

Wade, 25, sees this fight as a tremendous opportunity for him and he intends on taking advantage of that opportunity by beating the powerful 34-year-old Golovkin. Wade doesn’t see anything special when he looks at Golovkin’s fights other than his punching power, and he feels he’s very beatable. He says he’s going to beat him on April 23rd and then move on with his win to get bigger fights out there.

Golovkin: Canelo can fight at 155, I’ll fight at 160

golovkin123By Dan Ambrose: It’s not looking like IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) is going to give into Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s wish to have his fight against Golovkin staged at a catch-weight of 155lbs later this year.

Golovkin says that if Canelo must fight at 155, then he’s welcome to go ahead and fight at that weight, but he’s going to fight at the full weight of 160lbs for the middleweight division. Golovkin will not be giving Canelo a handicap by melting down to 155lbs in order to give him the advantage, even though Golovkin says he’s been weighing in at 164 and 165 recently.

Golovkin would only need to drop 10 pounds to take the fight at 155 for Canelo. However, Golovkin is an old school fighter, and he doesn’t believe in fighting at catch-weights.

Saunders: I was offered $1.5M for Golovkin fight, not $4m

saunders66By Jeff Aranow: WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders (23-0, 12 KOs) says was never offered the reported $4 million to fight IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) for a proposed fight.

Saunders says instead of it being $4 million, it was only $1.5 million. This is why he chose not to take the fight. Saunders says that if he was offered $4m, he would have agreed to it rather than electing to fight Max Bursak (32-4-1, 15 KOs), who he’ll be facing on April 30 at the Copper Box Arena in London, UK.

Kovalev, 6’0”, is looking forward to the fight with Ward so that he can prove to him who the better fighter is between them.

Last Saturday night, Kovalev was asked by the media about his thoughts on who would win a fight between IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) and Ward if that fight were to take place at some point in the future. Kovalev tried his best to be diplomatic with his answer, but he finally just spoke bluntly by saying that Golovkin has more ways of winning due to his punching power and his boxing skills.

Ward: Sanchez didn’t want to give me Golovkin

1-WardBarrera_HoganphotosBy Dan Ambrose: Light heavyweight contender Andre Ward (29-0, 15 KOs) says that IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin’s trainer Abel Sanchez sent his fighter Sullivan Barrera (17-1, 12 KOs) to face him rather than sending in Golovkin last Saturday night at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California, Ward thinks that Barrera was sent in to test the waters for Golovkin to see it was safe first.

Ward ended up easily beating Barrera by a 12 round unanimous decision in their fight on HBO Boxing. After the fight, Sanchez initially complimented Ward on his performance in beating his man Barrera. However, when asked by the media whether he thought Ward could beat undefeated IBF/WBA/WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev, Sanchez said this:

Sanchez likes Golovkin vs. Kell Brook fight

brook6By Scott Gilfoid: Trainer Abel Sanchez likes what he’s hearing about IBF welterweight champion Kell “Special K” Brook (36-0, 25 KOs) being interested in moving up to middleweight to take on unbeaten IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) at a catch-weight of 157 pounds.

Sanchez is open to the fight taking place between Brook and Golovkin if it can be negotiated between Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler and Brook’s promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport. Right now, Brook is talking about wanting to fight one of the top welterweights in the summer in Sheffield, UK. Brook is hoping Hearn can get him a fight against one the following names: Tim Bradley, Danny Garcia, Jessie Vargas, Manny Pacquiao, Keith Thurman and Shawn Porter.

It definitely helps that Brook has mentioned so many different names as potential opponents for his summer fight in Sheffield.

Khan still undecided about whether to fight Golovkin

khan12344By Dan Ambrose: Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) is totally confident that he’ll send the younger 25-year-old Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) down to his second career defeat on May 7 in their fight on HBO PPV. Khan says he’s not going to let a younger, smaller fighter like Canelo beat him. What Khan isn’t sure about is whether he should keep the WBC middleweight title he wins off Golden Boy Promotion’s flagship fighter Canelo or not.

If Khan chooses to keep the WBC strap, it’s going to come with a great responsibility because he’ll need to defend the belt against the WBC #1 mandatory challenger Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) in his very next fight. Khan says he’s not sure whether he’ll do that or not. He wants to beat Canelo, and then make a decision with his team based on how he performed in the fight against Canelo.
