Image: Erislandy Lara wants Gennady Golovkin next

By Jeff Aranow: Erislandy Lara (23-2-2, 13 KOs) had little problems last Saturday night in defending his WBA World junior middleweight title in beating Vanes Martirosyan (36-3-1, 21 KOs) by a 12 round unanimous decision in their rematch at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, Nevada. It was the 33-year-old Lara’s fourth successful title defense of his WBA belt.

He’s interested in breaking the record of 11 successful title defenses. set by Gianfranco Rosi . The fact that Rosi said the record without making a huge mark in the sport gives you an indication that Lara may need to do a lot more than break Rosi’s record of title defenses if he wants to accomplish something in his career.

Golovkin likely will need to agree to catch-weight for Canelo fight

Image: Golovkin likely will need to agree to catch-weight for Canelo fight

By Dan Ambrose: IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (35-0, 32 KOs) may have lost his only chance of getting a fight against Mexican star Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (47-1-1, 33 KOs) when Canelo vacated his WBC 160lb title last week.

With the WBC title, there was no way that Canelo could give the knockout artist Golovkin a take it or leave it offer by telling him that he must fight at a strength-draining catch-weight of 155lbs and agree to a lopsided purse split of 90-10.

Who’s the best?

golovkin633

By Brian Garnett: Too many times in boxing the fans are forced to wait for the fights that we want to see, such as, the five year wait for Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao. What we were left with, was a boring fight that looked like it was five years too late. Interestingly enough, we are on the cusp of some premier fights being put together in the next few months featuring the best fighters in their respective divisions facing each other with everything on the line.

Unbeaten, WBA welterweight champion Keith Thurman will be facing former IBF welterweight champ Shawn Porter whose only defeat came at the hands of Kell Brook. At age 27 and 28, Thurman and Porter, respectively, are considered to be the cream of the crop at 147lbs and both in their prime.

Saunders: I’ll fight Golovkin

saunders97By Scott Gilfoid: WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders (23-0, 12 KOs) says he’ll gladly give IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (35-0, 32 KOs) the fight he wants if he’s paid rightly, and if he has a say so on the venue for the fight. Saunders, 26, says he would even come to the United States to fight Golovkin if he’s paid well enough.

Saunders says he was contacted by Golovkin’s management after he won the WBO title last December in beating champion Andy Lee. However, Saunders says all he was offered for the Golovkin fight was $1 million to 1.5 million. Saunders didn’t see that as a lot of money for a unification fight against a popular fighter like Golovkin.

Boxing Fans must force the Canelo vs. Golovkin fight

Image: Boxing Fans must force the Canelo vs. Golovkin fightBy Robbie Bannatyne: Boxing is a business, a sport where financial imperatives take precedence over the principles of elite athletic competition where the best should be duty bound to face the best.

The murky waters of the boxing world were muddied further with the news that Canelo has vacated his WBC middleweight title, in what seems to many, a naked attempt to navigate his way around a fight with mandatory challenger, Gennady “GGG” Golovkin.
