De La Hoya guarantees Canelo vs. Golovkin takes place in 2017

Image: De La Hoya guarantees Canelo vs. Golovkin takes place in 2017

By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya is guaranteeing that his fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will absolutely take on middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin in September 2017, as long as the Kazakhstan fighter accepts the contract offered to him and signs it. De La Hoya insists that the contract is a fair contract for Golovkin.

As far as the weight goes, De La Hoya says Canelo will fight Golovkin WITHOUT a catchweight at the full 160 pounds for the division. De La Hoya’s guarantee that the Canelo-Golovkin fight will get made could wind up being an empty guarantee if the offer given to Golovkin isn’t a fair one.

WBC’s plans for Gennady Golovkin

Image: WBC’s plans for Gennady Golovkin

By Eric Baldwin: Middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin’s WBC mandatory challenger is going to be decided with a 4-man tournament held by the World Boxing Council. This is something the WBC has decided to do during their convention this week. The 4-fighters that will face each other in the tournament are as follows: David Lemieux, Jorge Sebastian Heiland, Ievgen Khytrov and Curtis Stevens. None of these fighters are great choices for Golovkin. Jermall Charlo needs to move up to 160 to give Golovkin a good opponent in near future.

The WBC tournament wouldn’t figure to be a great deal for Heiland, who has been ranked #1 by the WBC for quite some time without getting a title shot. For Heiland to have to fight for the mandatory sport, it creates a hoop to have to jump through.

The Chronicles of Pugilism: Part I

Image: The Chronicles of Pugilism: Part I

By BFQ: It has been about 3000 years since the first organized pugilistic contest took place in the Greek Olympics but in almost three millennia it hasn’t been a sport. In its most rudimentary form which almost every individual understands is that this oft called “sport” is indeed a life and death event.

It is a gladiatorial event where one man goes against another with their lives on the line albeit with a finely tuned skillset and technicality. One of the misconceptions that I and many other prizefighters have to encounter on a day to day basis is the audacity by which people categorize this event as a sport.

Roach and Froch want Golovkin to move up to 168

Image: Roach and Froch want Golovkin to move up to 168

By Allan Fox: Trainer Freddie Roach and former super middleweight champion Carl Froch think it’s time for middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin to move up to super middleweight in pursuit of bigger fights. They don’t see any opportunities for Triple G at 160, even though there’s a chance that he could get fights against Danny Jacobs and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in 2017.

Those two fights would seem like reason enough for GGG to stick around at 160, at least until he finds out what Canelo and his promoters at Golden Boy are going to do next year. If Golden Boy chooses to keep Canelo away from Golovkin while using his name constantly with the boxing media to attract interest, then Golovkin might want to move up to 168 to see which fights he can dig up in that weight class.

Golovkin hopes to fight 4 times in 2017

Image: Golovkin hopes to fight 4 times in 2017

By Eric Baldwin: If IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (36-0, 33 KOs) can get his World Boxing Association ordered fight against WBA ‘regular’ champion Daniel Jacobs out of the way in March, Triple G plans on fighting 4 times total for 2017.

The only thing that might prevent him from doing that is if his promoter loses the December 19 WBA ordered purse bid for his fight against Jacobs. The management for Jacobs could push the fight to beyond March, and that could further tie Golovkin down with the fight. He might end up having no time but to get even just two fights in 2017 depending on how long the fight with Jacobs drags on.

Golovkin should forget Canelo if fight isn’t made in 2017

Image: Golovkin should forget Canelo if fight isn’t made in 2017

By Dan Ambrose: Gennady “GGG” Golovkin and his management need to focus only fighting guys that are prepared to get inside the ring with him when asked. Golovkin has wasted too much time in his career with trying to get fights against Saul Canelo Alvarez, Daniel Jacobs and Billy Joe Saunders.

That’s time wasted. Golovkin has got to give his promoter Tom Loeffler marching orders to forget about guys that aren’t willing to fight him within three to four months, because he doesn’t have enough time left in his career for him to be spending time trying to get fights against Jacobs, Saunders or especially Canelo if they’re not ready to get inside the ring with him pronto.

Golovkin-Jacobs deal NOT reached, WBA orders purse bid

golovkin633

By Dan Ambrose: A deal was not reached by Wednesday’s deadline of 5:00 p.m. ET for the negotiations between Gennady “GGG” Golovkin and Daniel Jacobs’ management for a fight. The World Boxing Association has now ordered a purse bid on December 19 in their headquarters in Panama.

The minimum bid for the Golovkin-Jacobs purse bid is $400,000. The purse split is in favor of Golovkin 75% – Jacobs 25%. I’m sure the 25% purse split isn’t quite what Jacobs and his manager Al Haymon were looking for from the negotiations. They reportedly wanted a 60-40 deal.

Time running out on Golovkin-Jacobs 7-day deadline

golovkin633

By Dan Ambrose: It’s not looking good for the WBA’s 7-day deadline for the negotiations between middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin and WBA ‘regular’ 160lb champion Daniel Jacobs. The deadline runs out this Wednesday. A purse bid will be ordered after the deadline.

Oddly enough, Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler is still optimistic that he’ll be able to work a deal with Al Haymon, the manager for Jacobs, according to RingTV. However, Loeffler has been optimistic for months that he’d be able to get a deal done, and it’s just not happened.

Is Saunders ready for Golovkin and Canelo?

saunders1

By Scott Gilfoid: WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders (24-0, 12 KOs) had one of his poorer performances of his career last Saturday night in defeating hungry challenger Artur Akavov (16-2, 7 KOs) by a 12 round unanimous decision at the Paisley Lagoon Centre in Glasgow, Scotland. Saunders fought like a really rusty fighter against Akavov.

It’s not surprising though, because Saunders was coming off of a one-year layoff from boxing. With that much time off, Saunders was very fortunate to win the fight, period. Some fighters are never the same when they return to the sport after a long layoff like the one that Saunders had.

Saunders wants tune-ups before Golovkin & Canelo fights

saunders8733

By Scott Gilfoid: WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders (24-0, 12 KOs) wasn’t happy with his 12 round unanimous decision win on Saturday night over challenger Artur Akavov (16-2, 7 KOs) in his voluntary defense at the Lagoon Leisure Centre in Paisley, Scotland. Saunders felt that he was poor in the fight, because he had been out of the ring for an entire year. The judges gave Saunders the win by the scores 116-11, 116-112 and 115-113.

I along with a number of boxing fans felt that Saunders didn’t do enough to deserve the win. I scored it a draw. However, if I were to pick a winner between them, I would go with the 31-year-old Akavov, because he was the one who was working harder the entire fight. Saunders was just loafing along the ropes, looking lazy and not willing to work hard for the full three minutes of each round. Akavov lost, but I think he would have won if the fight had been in a different venue.
