By Jeff Aranow: Saul “Canelo: Alvarez is still fuming at the World Boxing Council for them giving his vacated WBC middleweight title to mandatory challenger Gennady “GGG: Golovkin without him having to fight for it inside the ring like he had in winning it off of Miguel Cotto. Canelo complains that he had to beat Cotto in 2015 to earn the WBC 160lb belt, and then the WBC just gave his title to GGG after he chose not to fight him.
By Jim Dower: David Lemieux (37-3, 33 KOs) will be back inside the ring this Saturday night against Marcos Reyes (35-4, 26 KOs), but the targets he has in the near future are Gennady “GGG” Golovkin and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Lemieux will be fighting Reyes, 29, on the undercard of Canelo’s fight against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The fight will be televised on HBO PPV.
Lemieux says he’s ready for both of them when the time comes.
By Dan Ambrose: Teddy Atlas says he’s hearing from sources that Golden Boy Promotions will be matching their fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (48-1-1, 34 KOs) against former IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux (37-3 35 KOs) in September rather than Gennady “GGG” Golovkin if Canelo gets past Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (50-2-1, 32 KOs) this Saturday night in their fight at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
By Dan Ambrose: Former 2 division world champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (48-1-1, 34 KOs) says that if he does fight middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs) in the future, it will be without his World Boxing Council 160-pound title on the line. Canelo doesn’t like how he was treated last year by the WBC when he was their WBC middleweight champion. Canelo says he was dealing with a court case in Miami, Florida at the time the WBC wanted him to defend the belt against GGG.
By Dan Ambrose: Middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin and his promoter Tom Loeffler will be waiting for the results of this Saturday’s clash between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. to try and face the winner of the fight in September. As previously reported, Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs) will not be fighting on June 10 against WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders.
By Dan Ambrose: Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (50-2-1, 32 KOs) and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (48-1-1, 34 KOs) fight this Saturday night, and Canelo may or may not be fighting Gennady “GGG” Golovkin in September if he wins the fight. Whether Canelo fights Golovkin or not is still undecided. The only thing we do know is Canelo’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya is saying that the Canelo-Golovkin fight will happen if it can be negotiated.
By Jeff Aranow: Gennady “GGG” Golovkin would be open to fighting either Saul “Canelo” Alvarez or Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in his next fight, says his promoter Tom Loeffler. They’re going to be sitting back and waiting for the outcome of the May 6th fight between Canelo and Chavez Jr. to see which of the two emerges as the winner. Loeffler says he would also very much like to make the Canelo-Golovkin fight this year if possible. Loeffler has been in contact with Canelo’s promoter Eric Gomez of Golden Boy Promotions since last November in trying to make the fight.
By Jeff Aranow: Trainer Freddie Roach wants his inactive fighter Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs) to step inside the ring with IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs). Roach says Cotto can beat Golovkin because he’s the better boxer. He says he’ll beat Golovkin just like he beat Saul Canelo Alvarez in 2015. For the record, Canelo beat Cotto but he was given a questionable 12 round decision. A lot of boxing fans thought Cotto deserved the win or the very least a draw against Canelo. The judges spoke, and they gave the ‘W’ to Canelo.
By Dan Ambrose: Saul Canelo Alvarez’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya says his fighter is going to knockout IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs) when the two of them face each other in September 2017. De La Hoya is saying the Canelo-Golovkin fight will definitely be happening this year, even though he’s not sure what’s going to take place with Canelo’s next fight against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. on May 6. De La Hoya says Canelo will be knocking out GGG.
By Dan Ambrose: Former IBF junior middleweight champion Jermall Charlo (25-0, 19 KOs) says he’s moving up to the 160 pound division, and he’s going to whip both Gennady “GGG” Golovkin and Daniel Jacobs after he moves up to that weight class. Charlo, 6’0”, would be a very difficult fight for Golovkin and Jacobs. With the power, size and speed Charlo possesses, he’d be a definite threat to both of them. We don’t know how good Charlo’s chin is because he hasn’t been hit by a big puncher yet.
