Broner faces the tough slugger Rees tonight in Atlantic City, New Jersey

rees6By Steven Ocallaghan: Tonight Adrien Broner Defends his title for the first time against tough slugger Gavin Rees. Rees, a former world champ at light welterweight has dropped down to see if he can cut it at 135. Broner is the rising star of US boxing and at only 23 has captured 2 titles at 2 weights. Impressive. This week speaking to former cruiserweight champ Johnny Nelson, Nelson at first had to reprimand Broner to show some respect first, asked him about a potential fight against Burns.

Broner has openly called out Burns, but how serious can we take it. Fighters call out all the time. But the fighters who call out in my mind feel they have a point to prove. Burns admitted he hadn’t trained for the February Broner fight after his domestic clash with Walsh was cancelled, but they are two completely different fights.

Broner willing to fight Burns in the UK if the money is good

broner4By Scott Gilfoid: WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) says he’s open to fighting WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) in the UK if he gets the right kind of cash for the fight to be worthwhile for him, the star, having to travel for.

Broner said to Sky Sports when asked if he’d be willing to travel to the UK to fight Burns “As long as my check is right. It don’t matter where we fight. It’s going to be the same results. He’s not going to beat me.”

Broner: I’m moving to 140 if Ricky Burns doesn’t fight me

burns5By Scott Gilfoid: WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) says he’s going to move up to light welterweight next if he can’t get WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) to agree to fight him. That’s the last fight that Broner wants at 135, as there’s no one else for him to really compete against if Burns beats IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez next month in their fight on March 16th in London.

Broner said to Sky Sport “If Ricky Burns don’t fight me then I’m just going to go up in weight. That’s the fight I’ve been wanting. Ricky Burns, fight me. You was supposed to fight me this time. You ran again. You were supposed to fight me at 130 at first. You ran.”

Burns: Rees is going to be a tougher opponent than Broner thinks

broner5By Scott Gilfoid: WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns thinks WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) is going to have a lot tougher time with Gavin Rees (37-1-1, 18 KO’s) tonight than he realizes. Burns says he’s sparred with Rees three times in the past, and he found him to be a tricky opponent to figure out.

Burns said to Sky Sports “People have been saying Gavin doesn’t have a chance. I’ve actually sparred with Gavin a few times. He’s a real nice guy. He’s very underestimated. When you see him fight, he’s got a good work rate, he likes to come and put it on you. He’s actually got a good boxing brain as well. He’s going to be a trickier fight than people think, and what Broner thinks as well.”

Broner vs. Rees tonight: Could lightning strike twice?

broner#1By Steven Ocallaghan: On 27th September 1986 a young Jamaican born Englishman who went by the name of Lloyd Honeyghan went on to shock unbeaten American superstar Donald The Lone Star Cobra Curry. Not only did he shock the Cobra he shook the world.

Curry , from Texas was probably the pound for pound king at that time and with a record of 25-0 with 20 KOs, was the overwhelming favourite. The bookies even stopped taking bets.
In the build up to the fight Curry was heard saying “who is this ragamuffin” hence the reason Honeyghan called himself the ragamuffin man.

Rees refuses to look at Broner during face-off at weigh-in

By Scott Gilfoid: In a telling sign for what we’ll be seeing tomorrow night in Atlantic City, New Jersey, Gavin Rees (37-1-1, 18 KO’s) flat out refused to look WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) in the eyes when the two came together for a face off at the weigh-in.

Not only did Rees refuse to look at Broner, but he didn’t even face him in the traditional sense. Rees turned sideways, as if to escape the menacing stares from the intimidating Broner. To say that Rees looked scared was putting it mildly. He looked downright frightened to the extreme.

Broner an overwhelming favorite to KO Rees

broner237By Scott Gilfoid: In a poll conducted by RingTV, WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) came out as an overwhelming favorite to defeat his challenger from Wales Gavin Rees (37-1-1, 18 KO’s) on Saturday night in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Close to 4,000 fans participated in the poll. Not only is Broner a huge favorite to win the fight, he’s also overwhelmingly being picked to win by a KO.

81.3 percent of the fans polled selected Broner to win the fight, and of that total, 70.6 percent see Broner stopping Rees at some point in the fight. Surprisingly 16.9% of the fans see Rees beating Broner with 12.6% of those fans seeing Rees winning by a KO.

Kellerman: Broner is a huge favorite over Rees because he’s special

broner62By Scott Gilfoid: HBO analyst Max Kellerman doesn’t think WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner is a huge favorite over Welsh fighter Gavin Rees due to Rees being a limited fighter, but rather because Broner is just so talented right now that he’s head and shoulders over the rest of the lightweight pack.

Kellerman said to I Film London “He’s [Rees] a good fighter, and the odds, which are absurdly wide over here, as much as 80-1 at some point, is a reflection more of what they think of Broner than what they think of Gavin. People think Broner is a special kind of fighter, and I think the odds reflect that over here. He can fight, Gavin Rees can fight…The way Broner, it was one of the most thorough beatings you’ll see a top fighter.

Broner with few fight options after he dismantles Rees

broner9282By Scott Gilfoid: As long as WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner chooses to stubbornly stick it out in the lightweight division, he’s going to have very options for interesting fights after he obliterates his latest over-matched opponent Gavin Rees on Saturday night at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Broner knows that he doesn’t have anyone to fight at 135, yet he claims he’s still young at 23, and there’s no reason for him to be in any rush to move up.

Broner’s immediate options after the Rees fight is for him to face the winner of the March 16th fight between WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns vs. IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez.
