Broner vs. Rees tonight: Could lightning strike twice?

broner#1By Steven Ocallaghan: On 27th September 1986 a young Jamaican born Englishman who went by the name of Lloyd Honeyghan went on to shock unbeaten American superstar Donald The Lone Star Cobra Curry. Not only did he shock the Cobra he shook the world.

Curry , from Texas was probably the pound for pound king at that time and with a record of 25-0 with 20 KOs, was the overwhelming favourite. The bookies even stopped taking bets.
In the build up to the fight Curry was heard saying “who is this ragamuffin” hence the reason Honeyghan called himself the ragamuffin man.

The reason I mentioned this was because Curry really didn’t know anything about Honeyghan , but he did afterthought fight.

Now tonight also in Atlantic City , New Jersey, the next American superstar Adrien Broner defends his title against another unheralded British Fighter in Gavin Rees.

The Welshman, like Honeyghan has virtually been given no chance of victory against the champion. Broner, having his 26th fight, like Curry was in defending against Honeyghan is regarded as almost being incapable of losing this fight.

Rees fights quite like Honeyghan in the fact the he doesn’t give you much time and space where as Broner is much more flashy than Curry but for me not as slick.

There are a lot of similarities in the 2 match-ups with the 2 champs being overwhelming favourites but as Honeyghan showed nothing is impossible.

Curry was fighting a higher level of opponent than Broner , but I wouldn’t say Rees is quite as good as Honeyghan was. So all in all it is an interesting match-up where I do expect Broner to prevail but you just never know, could lightning strike twice?
