Wladimir likely to face Pianeta on May 4th

wlad46By Allan Fox: With Floyd Mayweather Jr. signing a six-fight contract with Showtime, IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (59-3, 50 KO’s) will now likely face fringe contender Francesco Pianeta (28-0-1, 15 KO’s) on May 4th in Germany instead of American Bryan Jennings.

According to Dan Rafael, Wladimir was looking at facing Jennings on May 4th if Mayweather’s fight with Robert Guerrero was going to be televised on HBO, because the network was reportedly interested in purchasing the Wladimir-Pianeta fight to televise as part of a split site double-header on that night.

Wladimir Klitschko vs. Francesco Pianeta possible for April 6th in Hannover

pianeta43By Allan Fox: The talked about fight between IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (59-3, 50 KO’s) and Fres Oquendo won’t be happening for April 6th. Instead, the 36-year-old Wladimir Klitschko looks to be targeting the unbeaten #12 WBA fringe contender Francesco Pianeta (28-0-1, 15 KO’s) for a match-up that will be staged in Hannover, Niedersachsen, Germany.

According to Dan Rafael of ESPN, the 6’5” Pianeta has been approved by the German television network RTL.

The southpaw Pianeta is almost as tall as the 6’6” Wladimir, but that’s as far as the similarities go. Pianeta has zero power and few defensive skills. He’s still unbeaten but he’s been matched against poor opposition his entire 8 year pro career, which is why he’s only ranked in the top 15 by one of the sanctioning bodies.

Image: Pianeta decisions 43-year-old BothaBy Jim Dower: #13 WBO heavyweight fringe contender Francesco Pianeta (27-1-1, 14 KO’s) defeated 43-year-old Frans Botha (48-8-3, 29 KO’s) by a lackluster 10 round unanimous decision on Friday night at the RWE Rhein-Ruhr Sporthalle, Muelheim, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany. The final judges’ scores were 100-96, 99-92 and 97-93, all for Pianeta.

Botha, at one time one of the best heavyweights in the world in early 90s, hasn’t one fight since last year. He could do little more than throw and then grab against Pianeta tonight and he didn’t look good at all.

pac55553By Jim Dower: Manny Pacquiao will be looking for more than just a victory over World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Miguel Cotto this Saturday night at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Pacquiao will be seeking out his 7th world title in seven different weight classes. It’s almost an unheard of accomplishment, because for a fighter who started out as a skinny flyweight, it’s huge that Pacquiao could gain 30 pounds and win a 7th world title at welterweight.

Boxing Results: Huck and Frenkel victorious; Gamboa Wins

Yuriorkis Gamboa beat Darling Jimenez to win the vacant WBC international super featherweight championship. “El Ciclon de Guantanamo” dominated most of the fight but was down in the fourth when Jimenez caught him with a left. ARENA-CEO Ahmet Öner: “Gamboa is a complete fighter but tonight I was not happy with his performance. He was a little bit too arrogant and gave me a hard time. You must not forget that it was only his 10th pro-fight though. He has got to improve his defence but he will definitely be world champion one day. After all I am glad that he had to go the distance. That was an important experience for him.”
