Mayweather could appeal WBO’s decision to strip him of 147lb title

Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Pacquiao By Dan Ambrose: Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe is waiting to see what Floyd Mayweather Jr. will decide to do in response to the World Boxing Organization stripping him of his WBO welterweight title earlier this week on Monday for failing to pay $200,000 in sanctioning fees and giving up his WBA and WBC 154lb titles they had asked him to do.

Mayweather has 14 days to make his appeal to the WBO’s decision. However, even if he does appeal, the odds are stacked against him getting his WBO 147lb title back.

Mayweather isn’t unhurtable, says Thurman

thurman8888By Dan Ambrose: WBA World welterweight champion Keith Thurman’s persistence in trying to get a fight against WBA/WBC 147lb champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. is starting to remind some boxing fans of the way that Amir Khan has been after Mayweather lately in trying to land a big payday fight on September 12th.

Thurman insists he’s in on the Mayweather conversation in terms of potential candidates for his September fight despite the fact that Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellberbe is saying that he’s not someone they’re thinking about after he turned down a fight against unbeaten Errol Spence Jr. (17-0, 14 KOs), who they wanted Thurman to fight on the Mayweather undercard on September 12th for one of Mayweather’s world titles.

Ellerbe: Thurman can’t beat Spence; Mayweather’s not thinking about him

thurman2By Dan Ambrose: WBA World welterweight champion Keith Thurman (25-0, 21 KOs) got the door to a Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight shut in his face hard today by Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe, who said that the 26-year-old Thurman isn’t in the cards for Mayweather for his September 12th fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Ellerbe points out that Thurman was asked by Mayweather to fight the talented #8 WBA 147lb contender on his undercard in September, but Thurman said no to that fight. Ellerbe said he doesn’t see Thurman as a good enough fighter to beat Spence, so he’s dismissing him as a viable candidate for the Mayweather fight.

Berto could pose problem for Mayweather, says former trainer

berto444By Allan Fox: Former IBF/WBC 147lb champion Andre Berto’s former trainer Tony Morgan thinks Berto could give Floyd Mayweather Jr. on September 12th if he’s 100 percent ready for the fight. Morgan likes Berto’s hand speed and punching power, and he thinks he could give Mayweather problems if he ends up getting the fight.

It would be a big upset if Berto were able to get the victory over Mayweather. It would be a shock if Berto even gets picked out for the fight, because there are arguably more deserving fighters than Berto who rate a fight against Mayweather.

Mayfield: “I whooped Pacquiao and Khan in sparring”

mayfield(Photo credit: Team Mayfield) By Scott Gilfoid: One of the fighters that Floyd Mayweather Jr. is thinking of facing on September 12th, Karim Mayfield (19-2-1, 11 KOs), says he whipped both Amir Khan and Manny Pacquiao during a sparring session. Mayfield says that the beating he put on Khan was so bad that their mutual trainer Virgil Hunter actually had to stop the sparring session, presumably to save Khan. Mayfield says he always was able to land his shots in his sparring sessions with Khan.

Mayfield, Khan and Andre Berto are all under consideration for Mayweather’s next fight on September 12th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Mayweather stripped of WBO welterweight title

Floyd MayweatherBy Allan Fox: As expected, the World Boxing Organization championship committee has chosen to strip Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26 KOs) of his WBO welterweight title on Monday for failing to pay $200,000 in sanctioning fees following his victory over former WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao last May.

Mayweather no longer is the WBO 147lb champion. Mayweather says that he never received his WBO title, so how can he be giving up his WBO title when never even got it in the first place.

Mundine wants Mayweather fight in September

mundine4By Dan Ambrose: In an open letter former WBA super middleweight champion Anthony Mundine (47-6, 27 KOs) posted on his twitter account today, Mundine called out WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26 KOs) for September, saying he’s “the only one that can solve the Mayvinchi Code” if given the chance.

Mundine, 40, is ranked #4 WBA, #4 WBC, so he’s not even ranked high enough to be a mandatory challenger for Mayweather at junior middleweight, if Mayweather even cared about stuff like that. What Mayweather does care about is whether his opponents have a fan base in the United States, and unfortunately for Mundine, I don’t think he has much of any fan base in America.

Calling out Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Floyd Mayweather JrBy Gav Duthie: As we enter the second week of July the countdown is on for the final fight of Floyd Mayweather’s career. September 12 is just over 9 weeks away so given most training camps are at least 8 weeks long we should expect an announcement within the next fortnight at the most.

The only names mentioned so far as jovial as they are have been Andre Berto and Karim Mayfield. There are probably up to 20 or so fighters between the 140lb-160lb division that feel they deserve the fight but at the moment there are 3 who are making the most noise.

Mayweather expected to lose his WBO title today

Floyd Mayweather JrBy Allan Fox: The World Boxing Organization is widely expected to strip Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26 KOs) of his WBO 147lb title today due to him failing to give them the $200,000 sanctioning fee that they were asking for in order for him to keep his WBO title. The WBO gave Mayweather until last Friday at 4:30 p.m. ET to pay the sanctioning fee and vacate his WBA/WBC junior middleweight titles, and he did neither of those things.

Mayweather captured the WBO 147lb title with a 12 round unanimous decision victory over champion Manny Pacquiao on May 2nd at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.
