Lara wants Canelo-Trout winner or Mayweather

lara212By Allan Fox: #1 WBC junior middleweight contender Erislandy Lara (17-1-2, 11 KO’s) has his sights set on fighting the winner of the April 20th unification bout between WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and WBA champion Austin Trout. Lara also wants to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. is possible.

Lara, 29, has to get past #9 WBC Alfredo Angulo (22-2, 18 KO’s) in their fight on June 8th in Carson, California, but if Lara can win that fight then he’ll definitely be in line to face the Canelo vs. Trout winner.

Lara said to RingTV “If I could pick my next three fights, it would first start with the winner of the fight between Canelo Alvarez-Austin Trout, and then I would want to fight…Floyd Mayweather.”

The fight will be televised by Showtime and will take place at the Home Depot Center, in Carson, California, USA.

Alfredo Angulo vs. Erislandy Lara on Maidana-Lopez undercard on June 8th

angulo544By Eric Thomas: Junior middleweight contenders Alfredo Angulo (22-2, 18 KO’s) and Erislandy Lara (17-1-2, 11 KO’s) will be facing each other in the co-feature on the Josesito Lopez vs. Marcos Maidana card on June 8th at the Home Depot Center, in Carson, California, USA, according to Gabriel Montoya.

This is a good fight. Lara, #1 WBC, #3 WBO, #5 IBF is coming off of a 9th round technical draw against Vanes Martirosyan last November in a fight that Lara appeared to win.

If the fight had gone the full 12 there’s no question that Lara would have won because he was really starting to dominate at the time of the stoppage in the 9th. The fight was halted due to Martirosyan suffering a cut over his left eye in the 9th round from an accidental head-butt.

Della Rosa-Lara winner to be Canelo’s mandatory challenger

lara212By Dan Ambrose: The World Boxing Council has replaced Vanes Martirosyan with #3 WBC Emanuele Della Rosa (31-1, 8 KO’s) to face #1 WBC Erislandy Lara (17-1-2, 11 KO’s) in WBC 154 pound eliminator bout with the winner becoming the mandatory challenger for WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

Martirosyan already fought Lara last November, but the fight ended in the 9th round when Martirosyan was badly cut from a head-butt over his left eye. The right was then ruled a 9th round technical draw. Lara and Martirosyan were supposed to fight again so a mandatory could be determined from that bout, but Martirosyan failed to take the fight.

Groves to face Ndiaye for EBU 168 lb title; Martirosyan-Lara rematch

groves343434By Scott Gilfoid: Commonwealth super middleweight champion George Groves (16-0, 12 KO’s) will be facing #8 WBC Mouhamed Ali Ndiaye (22-1, 13 KO’s) for James DeGale’s recently vacated EBU super middleweight title in a still determined time and venue. Groves’ promoter Frank Warren reportedly won the purse bid for the fight.

It’s a fight that is really hard to understand because Groves is ranked #1 WBO, #5 WBA, #6 WBC, #7 IBF and there’s really no point at all in facing the little known 33-year-old Ndiaye for the European Boxing Union strap when Groves is already going to be getting a title shot against World Boxing Organization super middleweight champion Arthur Abraham in 2013.

Martirosyan would have lost to Lara had the fight gone the distance

Image: Martirosyan would have lost to Lara had the fight gone the distanceBy Dan Ambrose: Unbeaten junior middleweight contender Vanes Martirosyan (32-0-1, 20 KO’s) should consider himself very lucky that his fight was halted against Erislandy Lara (17-1-2, 11 KO’s) in the 9th round from a clash of heads last Saturday night because Martirosyan looked like he was on his way to losing that fight.

As it was the fight was halted and ruled a 9th round technical draw when Martirosyan was cut over the left eye during the head clash. It worked out well for Martirosyan because he was getting dominated in the last three rounds of the fight and he looked tired and confused against the southpaw Lara.

Martirosyan-Lara ends in technical draw; Garcia defeats Barros

Image: Martirosyan-Lara ends in technical draw; Garcia defeats BarrosBy Allan Fox: Perhaps the real winner for tonight’s fight between Vanes Martirosyan (32-0-1, 20 KO’s) and Erislandy Lara (17-1-2, 11 KO’s) is WBC junior middleweight champion Saul Alvarez, who now has an excuse not to fight either of them next after the two fighters fought to a 9 round technical decision tonight in their World Boxing Council 154 pound eliminator bout at the Wynn Resort, in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.

The fight was halted after Martirosyan was cut over his left eye from a head-butt in the 9th when he rammed heads with Lara. The judges’ scores were 86-85 to Martirosyan, 86-86 even, and 87-84 to Lara.

Schaefer hints that Saul Alvarez won’t face Lara-Martirosyan winner

Image: Schaefer hints that Saul Alvarez won't face Lara-Martirosyan winnerBy Dan Ambrose: This Saturday’s fight between Erislany Lara and Vanes Martirosyan is supposed to be a WBC junior middleweight eliminator bout with the winner becoming the mandatory challenger for WBC 154 lb champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. However, it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen according to some of the comments from Alvarez’s promoter Richard Schaefer at Golden Boy Promotions.

Schaefer says that Alvarez only wants the big fights and wants to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr, Miguel Cotto or Sergio Martinez next. According to the wbcboxing.com website, the WBC president Jose Sulaiman says that Alvarez has to fight the Lara-Martirosyan winner next and not one of the three names that Alvarez wants to fight in his next bout in May.

Sulaiman wants Canelo to fight Lara-Martirosyan winner next

Image: Sulaiman wants Canelo to fight Lara-Martirosyan winner nextBy Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions may have to do some persuading of WBC president Jose Sulaiman so that their fighter WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez can bypass the winner of this Saturday night’s WBC junior middleweight eliminator bout between Erislady Lara vs. Vanes Martirosyan because Sulaiman wants Alvarez to fight the winner of that fight next, not the fight that Alvarez is looking to get the next time he steps inside the ring on May 5th.

The World Boxing Council website at wbcboxing.com is reporting that Sulaiman wants Canelo to fight the WBC mandatory challenger next. This obviously isn’t good news for Golden Boy or Canelo because he was hoping to fight one of three opponents on the Mexican holiday Cinco de Mayo on May 5th next year: Floyd Mayweather Jr, Miguel Cotto or Sergio Martinez.
