angulo43By Allan Fox: The June 8th fight between junior middleweight contenders Erislandy Lara (17-1-2, 11 KO’s) and #9 WBC Alfredo Angulo (22-2, 18 KO’s) is finalized for June 8th, according to Steve Kim. The fight will be televised by Showtime and will take place at the Home Depot Center, in Carson, California, USA.

This is actually a very good card because not only date it have Angulo vs. Lara, but it also has welterweights Marcos Maidana vs. Josesito Lopez in the main event and super middleweight contender Sakio Bika taking on unbeaten Marco Antonio Periban on the undercard.

The Angulo-Lara fight should be interesting because Angulo is in a situation where he really can’t afford to lose if he wants to remain in the hunt for a title shot. He was already beaten by James Kirkland by a 6th round stoppage in November of 2011, and he’s only fought twice since then, beating Raul Casarez and Jorge Silva.

Angulo looked almost as bad against Silva as he did in his loss to Kirkland. The only difference was Silva didn’t have the size and power to take Angulo out the way that Kirkland did, but he was hitting him at will with combinations until he tired out in the last two rounds of the fight.

Angulo’s problem for the Lara is he’s going to have to try and trap Lara to land something big because Lara is going to be on the move all night long, hitting and running and doing his best job of imitating a young Floyd Mayweather Jr. Angulo doesn’t have fast hand or foot speed, and it’s going to be a real test for him to try and catch up to Lara to connect with enough shots to win a decision.

Angulo’s best chance of winning this fight is by a knockout, and that’s not going to happen unless he’s able to take advantage of every opportunity he has in this fight to try and take him out. Angulo has an excellent trainer in Virgil Hunter, and he’s going to be getting good sound advice, but unless he can catch up to Lara, the advice won’t mean a whole lot.
