By Dan Ambrose: WBA World junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara (23-2-2, 13 KOs) wasn’t happy to learn of the news of IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (35-0, 32 KOs) choosing to fight welterweight Kell “Special K” Brook (36-0, 25 KOs) for his next fight rather than choosing himself.

In fairness to Golovkin, he was in negotiations to fight middleweight Chris Eubank Jr. (23-1, 18 KOs) up until this week. The only reason the fight didn’t get made was because Eubank Jr. and his father Chris Eubank chose not to agree to the contract. Eubank Jr’s promoter Eddie Hearn came up with the idea of having Brook take the fight instead. The money will still be good for Golovkin, so it’s a smart business move on their part.

andrade1

(Photo credit Amanda Westcott/SHOWTIME) By Jeff Aranow: Unbeaten Demetrius Andrade (23-0, 16 KOs) put himself in position for a world title shot last Saturday night with his 12th round knockout win over contender Willie Nelson (25-3-1, 15 KOs) at the Turning Stone Resort in Verona, New York. Andrade is now the second mandatory challenger to WBC junior middleweight champion Jermell Charlo.

However, Andrade’s title shot against the 26-year-old Charlo will not be coming soon, because he has another mandatory to get out of the way first against #2 WBC Charles Hatley (26-1-1, 18 KOs) first before he can get to Andrade, according to Dan Rafael.

Erislandy Lara needs to go up to 160

Image: Erislandy Lara needs to go up to 160

By Eric Baldwin: WBA World junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara (23-2-2, 13 KOs) wants to get the big names like Gennady Golovkin and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez to fight him. However, Lara isn’t making himself a bigger name to get those fights by remaining in the 154lb division and spending time fighting guys that are no longer relevant as top five contenders like Jan Zaveck, Vanes Martirosyan, Ishe Smith and Delvin Rodriguez.

The 33-year-old Lara just finished chewing up a year and a half of his career fighting those four fighters. Lara lost to Canelo by a 12 round decision in July 2014. A rematch between them is probably not going to happen with Lara fighting the type of opposition he’s been facing.

By Jeff Aranow: Erislandy Lara (23-2-2, 13 KOs) had little problems last Saturday night in defending his WBA World junior middleweight title in beating Vanes Martirosyan (36-3-1, 21 KOs) by a 12 round unanimous decision in their rematch at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, Nevada. It was the 33-year-old Lara’s fourth successful title defense of his WBA belt.

He’s interested in breaking the record of 11 successful title defenses. set by Gianfranco Rosi . The fact that Rosi said the record without making a huge mark in the sport gives you an indication that Lara may need to do a lot more than break Rosi’s record of title defenses if he wants to accomplish something in his career.

Lara defeats Martirosyan in rematch

lara-charlo (18)

By Jim Dower: WBA World junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara (23-2-2, 13 KOs) held onto his title on Saturday night in defeating #15 WBC fringe contender Vanes Martirosyan (36-3-1, 21 KOs) by a close 12 round unanimous decision at the Vegas Events Center (DLVEC) in Las Vegas. The judges scored the fight 115-112, 116-111, 116-111.

Martirosyan was wrongly docked a point for throwing a punch on the belt-line in the 11th round. Referee Vic Drakulitch blew the call by counting it as a low blow. It’s unfortunate that a bad call should come in a crucial round like that, but that’s boxing. The point deduction helped Lara, was starting to struggle at the time.
