(Photo credit: Tom Casino/Showtime) By Thomas Cowan: Unbeaten American heavyweight Deontay Wilder (28-0, 28 KO’s) will be facing former WBO champion Siarhei Liakovich tonight in Indio, California. Wilder was going to fight Dereck Chisora in July, but that fell through because Wilder is not currently allowed to travel outside the States for legal reasons. Wilder said he would be facing a Russian heavyweight who was “much better than Chisora”. As it turned out, neither of these statements were true.

Liakovich is not from Russia, he’s from Belarus. Obviously, this doesn’t make him a bad opponent, I just wouldn’t let Deontay book his own flights if he’s flying to Europe anytime soon. The main disappointment though, is that Liakovich isn’t a good opponent.

The fight will be televised by Showtime, so it’s going to be a great opportunity for Deontay to showcase his talent in front of a huge national audience in the U.S. The 6’7” Deontay has already been pegged by IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko as the future of the heavyweight scene.

Deontay is chomping at the bit to tear Liakhovich apart tomorrow night, and he can’t wait to get him in the ring to put on a show for the U.S fans watching the fight on Showtime.

Deontay has been training hard for this fight, and he plans on taking Liakhovich out quickly to register his 29th consecutive knockout as he marches forward towards a title shot and to eclipse the record for consecutive knockouts of 44.

The thing is, Deontay, 27, didn’t start his career looking to break the all-time record for consecutive knockouts, but because of his right hand power is so incredible, he’s kind of stumbled into a competition to break the record.

Deontay’s trainer Mark Breland said “Honestly, we did not anticipate the knockouts. In fact, we are trying to get him to box and move more, which he’s beginning to do. He’s got good power in his right hand and a great 1-2 punch. So we’re trying to develop his jab. But his power is just overwhelming right now.”

McCline came away from the sparring session mighty impressed with Deontay’s power. Jameel say Deontay is the biggest puncher that he’s ever been in the ring with, and he’s been in with some ferocious punchers during his time.

It’s a huge compliment that Jameel sees the 6’7” Wilder as the biggest puncher he’s ever mixed it up with.
