Wilder vs. Firtha: Will Deontay ever step up?

wilder991By John Hoolan: It was announced this week that heavyweight Deontay Wilder’s next fight will be on Oct 26th on the undercard of the Bernard Hopkins vs. Karo Murat against Nicolai Firtha (21-10-1, 8 KO’s).

As you can see from his record Firtha has TEN losses. Wilder will be having his 30th pro fight against Firtha and is yet to step up to a level that could be classed anywhere near respectable.

Whilst Firtha is a tough cookie, he is just a journeyman and the level of fighter that Wilder should have fought two years ago, not now as he talks about taking control of the heavyweight scene. In fact Tyson Fury fought Firtha 2 years ago in his 15th fight and beat him in the 5th round. I take Wilder to win within 2 rounds.

Deontay faces Nicolai Firtha on October 26th in Atlantic City, New Jersey

deontay1By Scott Gilfoid: Undefeated #3 WBC, Deontay Wilder (29-0, 29 KO’s) faces journeyman Nicolai Firtha (21-10-1, 8 KO’s) in a stay busy fight on October 26th at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. This isn’t the fight that the 6’7” Deontay wanted for this card, because he wanted a big name to show off his stuff.

Unfortunately, none of the well-known talents wanted to mix it up with Deontay; leaving him little choice but to take the bout with Firtha. It’s still a good fight for Deontay, as he needs fights like this to keep improving his skills to sharpen up.

With knockout punchers like Deontay, timing is everything, and that’s why guys like Firtha are still worthy opponents for him.

Deontay Wilder vs. Nicolai Firtha on October 26th

deontay55American knockout artist Deontay ‘Bronze Bomber’ Wilder, will be taking a backwards step in his already non-progressive career, by taking on journeyman Nicolai Firtha on October 26th on the undercard of Karo Murat vs. Berbnard Hopkins fight at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

The fight card will be televised on Showtime in United States. It has to be said, this really is a backwards step for the highly touted American.

Wilder’s last fight seemed like a baby step forwards, fighting a former, though well past his best, world champion in Siarhei Liakhovich. Firtha was stopped by Tyson Fury in the fifth round in Fury’s 15th fight, so it is highly unlikely that Wilder is going to learn anything from this fight and it will no doubt be a short nights work.

Deontay Wilder targeting Vitali Klitschko’s WBC title

deontay4444By Scott Gilfoid: Unbeaten heavyweight contender Deontay Wilder (29-0, 29 KO’s) says he’s being positioned by his promoters at Golden Boy Promotions to go after WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko’s title in 2014.

The thought here is that Vitali will either retire or vacate his strap or he’ll have taken away from him by the World Boxing Council for failing to defend the title in a timely fashion.

It’s been a year since Vitali last defended his title, and at some point the WBC is going to have to strip Vitali of his belt if he’s not going to defend the title on a regular basis.

Hennessey wanted Deontay Wilder for Tyson Fury on September 28th?

wilder7By Scott Gilfoid: According to Hennessey Sports’ website, they looked at possibility of having American talent Deontay Wilder (29-0, 29 KO’s) step in and replace the injured David Haye against Hennessy-promoted heavyweight Tyson Fury (21-0, 15 KO’s) on September 28th. Unfortunately, they gave up on the idea for some reason.

Here’s the statement from Hennessey Sports’ website: “He [Fury] has done everything in his power to keep this date alive for his fans, even agreeing to fight Deontay Wilder on the 28th [if Team Wilder agreed], but this fight at short notice was obviously not considered to be box office.”

Deontay Wilder could land on Hopkins-Murat card on October 26th

wilder33By Scott Gilfoid: In order to help spruce up the October 26th Bernard Hopkins vs. Karo Murat card, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer is looking to add unbeaten heavyweight talent Deontay Wilder (29-0, 29 KO’s) to the card to beef it up. The fight card will be televised by Showtime and it’ll be taking place at the Boardwalk Hall, in Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA.

Unfortunately, there’s no real interesting fights on the card as of now because Hopkins-Murat is a terrible mismatch, as is the co-feature between WBO middleweight champion Peter Quillin and junior middleweight Gabriel Rosado. At least by adding Wilder, there might be one interesting fight on the card as long as they find a quality opponent for the 6’7″ Deontay.

Tyson Fury wants to fight Deontay Wilder after David Haye bout, says Hennessy

wilder48By Scott Gilfoid: Unbeaten British heavyweight Tyson Fury (21-0, 15 KO’s) says he wants to face unbeaten American contender Deontay Wilder (29-0, 29 KO’s) if Fury can get past David Haye (26-2, 24 KO’s) on September 28th in the UK. Fury’s promoter Mick Hennessy says that the 6’7″ Deontay is the one that Fury wants after Haye, and he’s eager to put that fight together.

Hennessy told I Film London “Tyson said once he knocks David Haye out, he’s going to take the best heavyweight who he considers in world boxing from the U.S [Deontay Wilder], and he’s going to take him on in a massive fight. That’s Tyson, he doesn’t swerve anyone, and Deontay, he wants the same.”

Deontay willing to fight Chisora in Haye’s gym

wilder99By Scott Gilfoid: In response to British heavyweight Dereck Chisora’s interest in facing unbeaten heavyweight contender Deontay Wilder (29-0, 29 KO’s) in a fight, Deontay is now inviting Chisora to come over to David Haye’s gym to fight him if he’s willing enough to do it. Deontay says he’s even willing to come over to Chisora’s gym to fight him. So the question is will Chisora taking Deontay up on the offer? My guess is the answer is a big NO!.

This is from Deontay’s trainer Jay Deas:

“I think Derek should focus on the task at hand with Gerber. We have a saying, “only a fool looks past what is in front of him.” Derek has been on twitter asking how Deontay couldn’t travel for a fight with him but can for sparring with Haye.
