Deontay Wilder vs. Alexander Povetkin in the works for May or June

1-wilderszpilka (4)By Scott Gilfoid: Negotiations are reportedly underway for a fight between WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (36-0, 35 KOs) and Alexander Povetkin (30-1, 22 KOs) for May or June of this year. Wilder vs. Povetkin is not a huge fight unfortunately, but Wilder has to get past the 36-year-old Povetkin for him to get to the bigger money fights against the likes of Tyson Fury, David Haye and Anthony Joshua.

It’ll be June at the latest. As for the location of the fight, it’ll be determined based on how the negotiations go and whether there is the need for a purse bid. If it does go to a purse bid, then the fight could wind up in Russia.

Time to step up for Deontay Wilder

1-wilderszpilka (8)By Paul Lam: Polish heavyweight contender Artur Szpilka gave a good account of himself on Saturday night against WBC heavyweight world champion Deontay Wilder, fighting on even terms before getting knocked out cold in the ninth round by a huge Wilder right hand which he never saw coming. It was a genuinely scary knockout, the kind which made you fear that someone might have just been killed in the ring.

Thankfully Szpilka regained consciousness in the ring, albeit after a tense couple of minutes of being laid out motionless on the canvas while onlookers waiting with bated breath. He spent the night in hospital as a precaution, with initial MRI and CT scans coming back clean.

Szpilka thinks Povetkin beats Deontay Wilder

1-wilderszpilka (6)By Scott Gilfoid: The recently knocked out Artur Szpilka (20-2, 15 KOs) says he suffered a broken left hand in his 9th round knockout loss to WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (36-0, 35 KOs) last Saturday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. It’s unclear what round the injury to Szpilka’s hand occurred, as he was still using his left hand all the way up until the end of the fight.

In fact, Szpilka was attempting to throw a wide left hook at the time that Deontay clocked him with a right to the head in round nine. The punch from Wilder knocked Szpilka unconscious for a short period. Perhaps if Szpilka didn’t attempt to throw the left hand, he would have been better off. The southpaw Szpilka was having some success using his right hand jab in the last couple of rounds until being knocked out by Wilder in the ninth.

Deontay Wilder: Szpilka was a crafty guy

wilder55555533333(Photo credit: Naoki Fakuda) By Dan Ambrose: It took WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (36-0, 35 KOs) a little longer than fans expected it would take him to dispatch #8 WBC challenger Artur Szpilka (20-2, 15 KOs) last Saturday night in their fight on Showtime. Wilder says he had a difficult time adjusting to the 26-year-old Szpilka’s southpaw style and the crafty way he moved around the ring all night long.

Wilder was expecting Szpilka to be a little easier to get to in the fight, but the PPolish fighter chose to move around frequently to keep Wilder guessing. Even when Szpilka was standing in front of Wilder, he was moving his upper body to keep him from being able to land his big right hand like he wanted to.

Wilder-Szpilka punch stats

wilder9911(Photo credit: Ed Diller/DiBella Entertainment) By Jim Dower: In a sign of how closely contested last Saturday’s title fight between WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (36-0, 35 KOs) and Artur Szpilka (20-2, 15 KOs) was as far as punches thrown in the fight, Deontay only had a small 12 punch advantage in punches landed in their fight at the Barclays Center in Brookyn, New York.

There was very little action in the fight due to the missed punches from both fighters and the movement. Deontay won the fight in the 9th round after dropping Szpilka with a blistering right to the head. Szpilka was unable to get up from the knockdown and the fight was stopped right away.

David Haye targeting Deontay Wilder and Charles Martin

haye6444By Scott Gilfoid: David Haye (27-2, 25 KOs) returned to the ring last Saturday night in stopping an over-matched, inexperienced 33-year-old Mark De Mori (30-2-2, 26 KOs) in the first round at the O2 Arena in London, UK. Haye was so excited about his easy win over De Mori that he’s now saying that he believes he’s only two or three fights away from fighting for a world title in the heavyweight division.

I know it’s hard to imagine a fighter as old as De Mori being inexperienced, but if you looked at his resume, it’s filled with 2nd and 3rd tier opposition. I don’t consider that as real experience. De Mori seems to have started out his career against horrible opposition the way normal fighters do, but instead of progressing to incredibly better opposition, he pretty much continued to face the poor opposition through much of his career.

Deontay: I’m going to hurt Tyson Fury real, real bad!

wilder65432(Photo credit: Ed Diller/DiBella Entertainment) By Scott Gilfoid: WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (36-0, 35 KOs) says he can’t wait to get Britain’s Tyson Fury (25-0, 18 KOs) inside the ring in 2016, because he wants to hurt Fury really bad and give him a beating. Unlike his opponent from last night, Artur Szpilka (20-2, 15 KOs), Deontay says he will not show any remorse after he bludgeons Fury into submission in their unification fight in the near future. Wilder want to take care of Fury and knock him out.

Fury attended last night at Wilder’s title defense against Szpilka at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. After the fight, Fury climbed into the ring and got in Wilder’s face, calling him out and saying he is a bum.

Deontay Wilder not worried about Alexander Povetkin

wilder899(Photo credit: Ed Diller/DiBella Entertainment) By Tim Fletcher: #1 WBC mandatory challenger Alexander Povetkin (30-1, 22 KOs) was in attendance last Saturday night to watch WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder’s title defense against Artur Szpilka (20-2, 15 KOs) at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Wilder dispatched Szpilka in the 9th round with a mighty right hand that left the Polish fighter not moving on the canvas. Povetkin will now be the next fighter that Wilder faces unless the World Boxing Council allows the 6’7” champion to veer around the 36-year-old Povetkin to fight a unification match against either IBF champion Charles Martin or the winner of the Tyson Fury vs. Wladimir Klitschko. For the time being, it looks like Wilder will be facing Povetkin next.

Deontay Wilder subtle improvements

wilder600(Photo credit: Ed Diller/DiBella Entertainment) By Listen: Deontay Wilder (36-0 35KO’s) ended his Heavyweight title defense last night with an emphatic counter right hand knockout, stopping a tough, Artur Szpilka (20-2, 15 KOs) in the 9th round. Szpilka was carried out in a stretcher, and our prayers are with him and his family, hoping for a speedy recovery, which looked promising.

It is easy to see the physical attributes, such as athleticism and extraordinary power that Wilder displays. With that being said, we have seen many contenders and young champions, with little amateur experience use physical attributes to rise up the ranks only to fail when faced with polished competition.
