Demetrius Andrade vs. Freddy Hernandez tonight on Showtime in Huntington, New York

007HernandezandAndradeMG_7593(Photo credit: Tom Casino/Showtime) By Dan Ambrose: Unbeaten junior middleweight contender Demetrius Andrade (18-0, 13 KO’s) will be taking a significant step up in competition tonight in taking on the tough Mexican Freddy Hernandez (30-3, 20 KO’s) in a scheduled 10 round bout on Showtime at the Paramount Theatre, Huntington, New York, USA.

This fight will mark the first time that the 24-year-old Andrade has fought under the guidance of new trainer Virgil Hunter, so it should be interesting to see what changes Hunter has made, if any, with Andrade’s game. Hunter says he’s only had 10 weeks to work with the 6’1” southpaw Andrade, #3 IBF, #3 WBO, #8 WBC, #13 WBA, and that’s probably not enough time to see any real major changes to his game.

Demetrius Andrade talks ahead of Shobox main event with Freddy Hernandez

andrade3By Ian Aldous: On Friday January 25th, Demetrius Andrade (18-0) will attempt to make a big push towards the top of the junior middleweight division when he faces former world title challenger, Freddy Hernandez (30-3) on a ‘Shobox: The New Generation’ telecast live on Showtime. Just prior to the New Year, Demetrius took some time to talk with me about the fight and his fledgling career.

A fight with Freddy Hernandez seems like a logical fight for the development of his young career. Last time out, Hernandez lost a unanimous ten round decision to Erislandy Lara, the Cuban who’s rated in the top ten junior middleweights by Boxrec and The Ring magazine. Hernandez poses a significant challenge on January 25th. “Yeah, I believe this is a great step up and to show the people that this is the time for me to start stepping up. I’m 18-0 and people wanna start seeing me fight better guys and I think this is the bout to take.”

By Jim Dower: Former Amir Khan destroyer light welterweight contender Breidis Prescott (24-2, 19 KO’s) easily beat Mongolian Bayan Jargal (15-2-3, 9 KOs) in an impressive one-sided 10 round unanimous decision on Friday night at the Mohegan Sun Casino, in Uncasville, Connecticut. The final judges’ scores were 99-91, 99-90, and 100-90. Prescott landed a lot of really heavy shots in the first six rounds of the fight. To Jargal’s credit, he took the shots well by turning his head with the punches.

Andrade defeats Herrera, but looks badly flawed

Image: Andrade defeats Herrera, but looks badly flawedBy Jim Dower: 2008 U.S Olympian Demetrius Andrade (12-0, 8 KO’s) defeated Alberto Herrera (7-2-1, 5 KO’s) by an 8 round unanimous decision on Friday night at the Cox Pavilion, in Las Vegas, Nevada. The final judges’ scores were 79-73, 80-72 and 80-72. The Andrade may have won the fight, but he showed an awful lot of flaws during the fight on defense and by his inability to throw combinations. He looked for the most part like a technically unsound version of Andre Dirrell, only more offensively minded. Dirrell is a bigger puncher and a better fighter on offense when he wants to be, but he doesn’t think offense as much as Andrade.

Mauricio Herrera: a Force in the Junior Welters after defeating Provodnikov

Image: Mauricio Herrera: a Force in the Junior Welters after defeating ProvodnikovBy Francisco Hernandez: Last night at the Cox Pavilion, Las Vegas, Nevada we were treated to a great fight between Mauricio Herrera and Serbian Ruslan Provodnikov. Mauricio Herrera demonstrated he has what it takes to fight any of the best at junior welterweight and beat them on a good night. Ruslan Provodnikov a native of Siberia has probably after Marcos Maidana, the most crunching punching power in the light welters. This ESPN televised fight had more action than anything you will probably see in some of the Pay per View fights programmed for this year of 2011.
