Image: Andrade destroys Cisneros in 1st round KOBy Jim Dower: Unbeaten junior middleweight contender Demetrius Andrade (17-0, 12 KO’s) flattened an out of shape looking Rudy Cisneros (12-4, 11 KO’s) in the 1st round in a mismatch on Saturday night at the Mohegan Sun Casino, in Uncasville, Connecticut.

The end came when the 24-year-old Andrade connected with a big right-left combination that sent the 30-year-old Cisneros down on the canvas backwards. Cisneros was badly hurt and the fight was immediately halted by referee Mike Ortega at 2:59 of the 1st round. For Cisneros, this is his second consecutive knockout loss.

Andrade, #6 WBO, #12 IBF, #15 WBC, stalked Cisneros earlier in the round, landing jabs, right hooks and combinations. Cisneros was only able to land a few shots with most of them being blocked on the gloves of Andrade. With a little more than a minute to go in the round, Andrade staggered Cisneros with a hard left hand to the head. He didn’t go for the kill immediately, however, instead letting Cisneros eat jabs and left hands to the body. With 10 seconds to go in the round, Andrade pounced on Cisneros, landing a perfect right hand to the head followed by a left that put down on the canvas. The fight was then halted.

The 6’1″ southpaw Andrade needs to really step up the level of his opposition because he’s been put in soft in most of his fights and has been knocking the over-matched opposition out in one or two rounds as of late. If he’s going to continue to improve and eventually get to title fight, he’s got to start facing 1st tier opposition instead of the 2nd and 3rd tier guys that are being fed to him each time. He looks like a champion against these guys, but I have serious doubts about how he’ll perform if he’s ever put in with a quality fighter like Erislandy Lara or Saul Alvarez. Those guys know how to fight and aren’t fighting low level opposition like Andrade.
