Barker defeats Geale; Kiko Martinez stops Jhonatan Romero

geale3By Jim Dower: British middleweight contender Darren Barker (26-1, 16 KO’s) survived a bad 6th round knockdown to go and outwork IBF middleweight champion Daniel Geale (29-2, 15 KO’s) in earning a 12 round split decision win on Saturday night at the Revel Resort, in Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA. The final judges scores were 114-113 for Geale, 114-113 and 116-111 for Barker.

Barker landed the harder shots, and he was the busier fighter all night long. Geale moved around a lot, and used a lot of feints, but he didn’t throw enough punches to make a case that he should have won.

In the 6th, Geale dropped Barker with a hard left to the midsection. Barker looked to be in bad pain, and he stayed down until the count of 8. Barker was then able to come back in the round and control the last 15 seconds of action.

Barker’s trainer looking past Geale fight

1803(Photo credit: Photo Credit: Mario Serrano – Gary Shaw Productions) By Scott Gilfoid: Tony Sims, the trainer for Britain’s Darren Barker (25-1, 16 KO’s), is already looking past Barker’s fight this Saturday night against IBF middleweight champion Daniel Geale (29-1, 15 KO’s) at the Revel Resort, in Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA.

Sims is looking towards fights for Barker against fellow Brits Martin Murray, Andy Lee, John Ryder and Billy Joe Saunders. It’s always interesting when the underdogs trainer is already assuming his fighter is going to win when in reality he stands almost no chance of winning.

Darren Barker vs. Daniel Geale next Saturday, August 17th at the Revel Resort in Atlantic City

barker343By Scott Gilfoid: #3 IBF, #13 WBO, Darren Barker (25-1, 16 KO’s) will be taking a huge step up in class next Saturday night on August 17th against IBF middleweight champion Daniel Geale (29-1, 15 KO’s) at the Revel Resort, in Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA.

Barker’s been saying lately that he sees himself as a better fighter than Geale, and how he’s definitely going to beat him. Well, we’re going to get a chance to see if Barker can prove that he’s better in the ring, because Barker failed miserably when he stepped up the only time in his 9 year pro career when he faced Sergio Martinez.

It was an awful fight to watch, as Barker played it safe for 10 rounds, and then got blasted out by Martinez in the 11th. Barker had been a pro for 7 years, and had fought pretty much only domestic and Euro level opposition.

Barker: I’m better than Geale

barker382By Scott Gilfoid: #3 IBF, Darren Barker (25-1, 16 KO’s) feels he’s the superior fighter to IBF middleweight champion Daniel Geale (29-1, 15 KO’s), and he thinks he’s going to beat him in their fight this month on August 17th at the Revel Resort, in Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA.

Barker said to Sky Sports “I truly believe I’m better than him. Whilst I would never underestimate him, I truly believe it’s my time and my destiny. I know what I’m all about and I know how to beat him so I can’t wait for August 17.”

Barker: I know I’ll beat Geale

barker232By Scott Gilfoid: #3 IBF, Darren Barker (25-1, 16 KO’s) thinks he’s improved since getting stopped in the 11th round by Sergio Martinez in October 2011. Barker has only fought twice since then, beating Kerry Hope and Simone Rotolo both by stoppages.

This month, Barker will be taking a step up a couple of levels from those guys to face IBF middleweight champion Daniel Geale (29-1, 15 KO’s) on August 17th at the Revel Resort in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Barker, 31, sees himself winning this fight despite the fact that he’s not faced anyone of quality since Sergio whipped him.

Darren Barker: Been Through The Storm

barker422By @BoxingMuse: If you don’t know much about English middleweight Darren Barker, it is significant to consider the number of trials and tribulations he has had to overcome throughout his professional career both inside and outside of the ropes. Before Barker challenges for the IBF middleweight championship against Daniel Geale on August 17 in New York take a walk in his shoes.

Starting at Finchley & District Amateur Boxing club, Barker then moved on to the legendary Repton Boys Club in which he achieved a gold medal at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester to top off a commendable amateur career with the resume of 55-13.

Barker: I’ve got the advantage over Geale in every department

barker5444By Scott Gilfoid: #6 IBF, Darren Barker (25-1, 16 KO’s) feels he’s got too many skills for IBF middleweight champion Daniel Geale (29-1, 15 KO’s) to beat him in their fight next month on August 17th at the Revel Resort, in Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA. Barker, 31, wants to snatch Geale’s IBF strap and then take it back to the UK with him.

Barker said to Sky’s Toe-2-toe podcast “I’ve worked too hard not to beat him, and I feel like I’ve got the advantage in every department. It’s about getting it right on the night and bringing that belt home with me.”

Hearn: Barker can face Golovkin once he wins IBF title

barker2By Scott Gilfoid: Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn says he wouldn’t mind putting his fighter Darren Barker (25-1, 16 KO’s) in with WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (27-0, 24 KO’s) if he can beat IBF middleweight champion Daniel Geale (29-1, 15 KO’s) next month in their fight on August 17th at the Revel Resort in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Hearn said to I Film London “Barker is going to own the IBF title then he can think about Golovkin, but he’s definitely not a fighter I’ll be cueing up to take on Darren Barker. Felix Sturm’s a lot easier than Gennady Golovkin.”

Barker, Bellew, Quigg: Future world champions

barker56433By JK James: Anyone who follows British boxing and in particular boxing on Sky Sports are aware that Eddie Hearn has all but secured three of his fighters world title shots. Darren Barker (25-1-0,16ko’s) has a an upcoming shot at Daniel Geale (29-1-0,15ko’s) for the IBF middleweight title, Adonis Stevenson (21-1-0,18ko’s) has reportedly been ordered to defend his WBC light heavyweight title against mandatory challenger Tony Bellew (20-1-1,12ko’s) and Scott Quigg (26-0-1,19ko’s) has been ordered to fight for the vacant WBA super bantamweight title against Yoandri Salinas(20-0-1,13ko’s).

In my opinion all three of these upcoming fights are legitimate opportunities for Matchroom fighters to win world title’s unlike the efforts of Gavin Rees in his hearty effort against Adrien Broner and the instantly forgettable fight between Lee Purdy and Devon Alexander. Here I will look at each fighters credentials in there attempt to win there maiden world championships.

Barker-Geale on August 17th in Verona, New York

barker2By Scott Gilfoid: Darren Barker (25-1, 16 KO’s) will get his first shot at a real honest to goodness world title on August 17th against IBF middleweight champion Daniel Geale (29-1, 15 KO’s) at the Turning Stone Resort & Casino in Verona, New York.

Barker previously fought WBC Diamond middleweight champion Sergio Martinez two years ago and was blasted out in 11 rounds, but I don’t recognize that as an actual world title.

I see the Diamond strap as one of those straps to get a sanctioning fee. Martinez won that strap in a fight against Sergiy Dzinziruk in March of 2011, and I’m still trying to figure out why Martinez even bothered having that title on the line.
