By Jeff Aranow: Daniel Jacobs (32-1, 29 KOs) could prove to be the toughest test of IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin’s career, according to his trainer Abel Sanchez. Golovkin will be facing Jacobs on March 18 on HBO pay-per-view at Madison Square Garden in New York. Sanchez thinks that Jacobs will a difficult opponent because of his punching power, speed and athleticism, and he’s looking forward to the fight.

Sanchez is happy that Golovkin is finally facing someone with punching power for a change. However, Jacobs is far from the first big puncher Golovkin has faced in his 12-year pro career. He’s been in with David Lemieux and Curtis Stevens.

Brook thinks that if not for him suffering a broken right eye socket, he might have won the fight. Brook’s promoter Eddie Hearn says that Brook told him that he would have beaten Golovkin if not for the eye injury.

A lot of boxing fans are really up for the Golovkin-Jacobs fight, as it’s the best match-up at 160 in quite some time. Saul Canelo Alvarez fought Miguel Cotto at middleweight in 2015, but that was a catchweight fight held at 155lbs.

Image: Lara should target Golovkin after Foreman fight

By Dan Ambrose: WBA junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara (23-2-2, 13 KOs) has a match scheduled this Friday against a name from the past in Yuri Foreman (34-2, 10 KOs) at Hialeah Park in Hialeah, Florida on Premier Boxing Champions on Spike. Lara has talked a lot in the past about wanting to fight IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin.

With Lara being the WBA champion, he can easily make a request to the WBA to have him positioned at No.1 in the WBA’s 160lb rankings. The WBA would likely do this just as the World Boxing Organization recently elevated WBO 154lb champion Saul Canelo Alvarez to the No.1 contender for WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders.

Jacobs was inspired by Ward’s performance against Kovalev

Image: Jacobs was inspired by Ward’s performance against Kovalev

By Allan Fox: In what has to be seen as a bad sign for the March 18 fight between IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (36-0, 33 KOs) and Daniel Jacobs (32-1, 29 KOs) if you were hoping for an exciting crowd-pleasing fight, Jacobs has added trainer Virgil Hunter to his training team, and he’s saying that his fighter Andre Ward’s performance against Sergey Kovalev has “inspired” him.

The reason why it’s not good news for boxing fans is the fact that Ward smothered Kovalev’s offense all night long by wrestling with him to keep him from getting his shots off. Ward briefly tried to fight Kovalev like he’d done with his three previous opponents, but after getting dropped in the 2nd round, Ward went into the wrestling mode and stayed there for the remainder of the night.

Golovkin will school Canelo says Kenny Porter

Image: Golovkin will school Canelo says Kenny Porter

By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Kenny Porter sees IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (36-0, 33 KOs) badly beating Golden Boy Promotion’s money fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (48-1-1, 34 KOs) when that fight eventually happens one of these days. Porter thinks that Golovkin will totally school the 26-year-old Canelo, and he compares the mismatch in the same way he does with the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Canelo fight from 2013.

Mayweather had a ridiculously easy 12 round decision win over Canelo, who could do little more than throw left hooks that missed by a mile all night long. Canelo looked amateurish in the fight, and he got red in the face and tired very quickly.
