Quillin & Witherspoon Both Win In Impressive Fashion

quillin3246463.jpgBy Robert Cavender: Undefeated middleweight prospect Peter Quillin (18-0, 14 KOs) won a lopsided 10-round unanimous decision over three-time middleweight championship challenger Antwun Echols (31-8-4, 27 KOs) at the Hammerstein Ballrom, in New York City, New York, on Wednesday night. The final judges’ scores were 99-91, 98-92 and 98-91, all for Quillin. In an earlier bout, undefeated heavyweight prospect Chazz Witherspoon (23-0, 15 KOs), the 2nd cousin of former heavyweight champion Tim Witherspoon, defeated journeyman fighter Domonic Jenkins (13-8-1, 6 KOs) by a 10-round unanimous decision.

Quillin, 24, used his superior power and size to dominate the smaller, less skilled Echols in the process of pounding out a 10-round decision. In fact, Quillin dominated Echols with ease, making him seem like a much smaller and weaker puncher in the process. It was unusual seeing Echols in with a fighter with more power than him, and the effect it had on him was to pretty much shut down his offense for most of the bout. Indeed, only in rare situations did Echols reveal his power and by even then it was late in the fight when he was well behind in the scoring.

Witherspoon Decisions Releford

Undefeated heavyweight prospect Chazz Witherspoon (21-0, 14 KOs) had a tougher time than expected in winning an eight-round unanimous decision victory over Kendrick Releford (15-10-2, 6 KOs) on Saturday night at the Bally’s Hotel & Casino, in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Witherspoon, a slow, methodical-type fighter with very heavyweight hands, but not a real big punch, wasn’t able to break down Releford like he’d done against his previous 20 opponents, and found him self in a dog fight by the fourth round when Releford’s speed advantage began to turn the fight around.

Witherspoon Stops Griffis!

witherspoon35353535.jpgBy Matt Rohr: On Friday night, heavyweight prospect Chazz Witherspoon (19-0, 13 KOs) had a much tougher time against Talmadge Griffis (24-7-3, 16 KOs), as he struggled much of the bout before coming on and stopping him in the ninth round of their 10-round bout at the City Center arena in Saratoga Springs, New York. Witherspoon, 25, the cousin of the heavyweight boxing great Tim Witherspoon, seemed timid in the early rounds, rarely throwing any meaningful punches aside from jabs.

Griffis, 32, on the other hand, was throwing most of the meaningful combinations up until the 6th round, when he appeared to wear down. Griffis, who took the bout on short notice, was outweighed by 30 pounds by Withersppon, making the fight seem to be between a heavyweight and a cruiserweight. If it hadn’t been for his stamina wearing out, Griffis would have had an excellent chance at making an upset of the hyped Witherspoon.
