Mayweather weighing 147 already for Guerrero bout

Floyd MayweatherBy Chris Williams: With a week and a half to go before his May 4th fight against WBC interim welterweight champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KO’s), Floyd Mayweather Jr. (43-0, 26 KO’s) is already at 147 lbs for the fight and has been for the past two days, according to Dan Rafael.

This isn’t Mayweather rehydrating to make 147. He actually weighs 147 and will likely come into the fight weighing that on the night of the fight. This is obviously a great reason why Mayweather can’t fight WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez because this fighter rehydrated up to 172 lbs. and above and that would give him a 25 pound weight advantage over Mayweather if the fight were to be made.

Cotto leading candidate for Canelo’s next fight on September 14th

cotto5By Dan Ambrose: Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions has confirmed that WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will be fighting next on September 14th against a still to be determined opponent and venue. He’s waiting on the results of the Robert Guerrero vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight to try and get the winner of that fight.

Canelo’s manager Eddie Reynoso would like to have Canelo face Mayweather, as would De La Hoya. However, given that Canelo out-weighs Mayweather by 25 pounds when he fights, it’s not likely that Mayweather is going to agree to fight someone with that kind of huge weight advantage over him, just as Canelo would likely never agree to fight cruiserweights Marco Huck and Denis Lebdev, who would have a 25 pound weight advantage over Canelo.

Canelo said what to Mayweather?

canelo99By Robert Elmore: When Floyd Mayweather took on Oscar De La Hoya in 2007, Floyd had to concede everything in order to make the mega fight happen. The weight, gloves, ring size, and purse where all stacked in the Golden Boy’s favor. Mayweather didn’t complain one bit. He understood that in order to crossover and become pay per view king, he would have to put his pride aside to end up where he is today.

I would dare to say, Floyd was looking at years down the road, rather just right then. The gamble paid off. The fight became the highest grossing fight in boxing history in pay per view buys and in total revenue. Mayweather has gone on to break records and collect huge pay days since that time. But Oscar was the key to his success.

Wilder vs. Harrison: The truth

wilder4By Tony Crooks: Sometimes in life we all have to take a step back and take a glimpse at our own opinions and accept that we all make mistakes. We all do, we are human after all. I would like to take an unbiased look at the forth coming Deontay Wilder vs. Audley Harrison bout this coming weekend at the Motorpoint Arena, in Sheffield, UK.

I would like to start with Deontay Wilder. By all accounts and speaking with other boxing journalists, Wilder is a really nice guy. He fights to support his daughter. Please remember this before you make any comments. Yes, he has not fought anybody of note, but he has done what has been asked of him. The hype that surrounds Wilder is his so called super human punching power.

Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Tim Bradley on September 14th at the Thomas & Mack Center, Las Vegas, Nevada

marquez456By Chris Williams: The proposed fight between WBO welterweight champion Tim Bradley and Juan Manuel Marquez has been confirmed by their promoter Bob Arum, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN. The fight will take place on September 14th at the Thomas & Mack Center, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The date could change depending on whether Floyd Mayweather Jr. will be fighting on September 14th or not. Arum seems to think Mayweather won’t be, but if he does then Arum will move the Bradley-Marquez fight to October.

Audley: Deontay will be an interesting puzzle for me

wilder34By Scott Gilfoid: British heavyweight Audley Harrison (31-6, 23 KO’s) figures that a win over unbeaten American heavyweight Deontay Wilder (27-0, 27 KO’s) this Saturday night will put him in contention for a title shot against one of the Klitschko brothers. As of now, Audley doesn’t have a top 15 ranking by any of the sanctioning bodies.

The 41-year-old Audley is not favored to beat the 6’7” Wilder on Saturday.

Audley said to Sky Sports News “I was looking for someone in the top 10 and so I couldn’t ask for anyone better than America’s next big thing…he is going to be an interesting puzzle for me to figure out…I have to figure out a way to get through that power; he has that big right hand.”

Special Fighter and Injuries

garcia2By Tim Trout: During the Manny Pacquiao vs. Antonio Margarito fight, HBO analyst Emanuel Steward said that Pacquiao was the best offensive fighter he had ever seen. Pacquiao’s fans love Pacquiao so much because he delivers excitement, aggression and incredible skill with every fight. During the Pacquiao vs. Margarito fight, Pacquiao landed a six punch combination on Margarito, while Margarito’s guard was up the entire time.

There are tons of fighters out there who have talent, but very few are Special. The “Special” fighters do things the other fighters can’t do. They deliver larger than life performances. Floyd Mayweather Jr. is another special fighter. Most opponents can’t hit Floyd because he is no longer there to be hit. Dedicated boxing fans will do almost anything to support the Special boxers, because of the level of entertainment and sense of awe they provide.

Austin Trout and Steve Cunningham: Fantastic Losers

trout888By Michael Byrne: Austin Trout and Steve Cunningham were both on the losing side on Saturday night, with Trout losing his ‘0’ and USS finding himself glued to the canvas. However, they can both draw some big positives from their losses. Both men spoke well in their ring interviews after their defeats: Trout was incredibly humble, and Cunningham was honest and accepting.

Trout could have complained about the ‘hometown’ judging, especially the 118-109 verdict, but instead decided to accept his defeat and praise Canelo. Presumably, he is not sat at home looking for a ‘man-in-the-hat’ on the replays. Cunningham could have complained about Tyson Fury being anything but gentlemanly, but instead managed to make Fury look even more dishonorable by showing how a gentleman really should act.

Khan’s trainer: Julio Diaz is a dangerous rival

diaz33By Scott Gilfoid: Virgil Hunter, the trainer for former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan, sees his opponent Julio Diaz as a serious threat to Khan in their fight this Saturday night in Sheffield, UK. While the vast majority of the boxing world sees Diaz as just another past his best opponent that was hand-picked by Khan’s promoters for to look good against, Hunter sees Diaz as still being a high quality fighter of the first order.

Hunter said to the telegraph.co.uk “Julio Diaz is not just an opponent. He’s a serious two-time world champion, a dangerous rival, and should be respected as such. He’s a formidable foe…this is not just a comeback fight; this is a tough championship fight.”
