Andy Lee destroys Daryl Cunningham in 1st round TKO

New York, NY (5/15/13) – Earlier tonight before a sold-out partisan crowd at NYC’s famed BB King Blues Club in midtown Manhattan, DiBella Entertainment presented the latest edition of its Broadway Boxing series, with an exciting eight-bout card headlined by WBA and WBC #8-rated middleweight contender “Irish” Andy Lee (29-2, 20KO’s) as he squared off against Daryl Cunningham (28-4, 11KO’s) in a 10-round middleweight match-up.

Povetkin-Wawrzyk: Alexander takes risky stay busy fight this Friday night, May 17th in Moscow, Russia

povetkin41By Eric Thomas: WBA heavyweight champion Alexander Povetkin (25-0, 17 KO’s) has decided to slip in a stay busy tune-up fight against little known fringe contender Andrzej Wawrzyk (27-0, 13 KO’s) this Friday night at the Crocus City Hall, in Moscow, Russia.

This is a fight that is supposed to get the 6’2” Povetkin ready for a huge money showdown against the 6’6” IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko this summer, but it’s doubtful that the 6’5” Wawrzyk will be any kind of preparation for what Povetkin will be facing this summer when he gets in the ring with Wladimir.

Arreola has nose surgery; Love tests positive for diuretic

arreola33By Allan Fox: Heavyweight contender Chris Arreola (35-3, 30 KO’s) had nose surgery last Friday to repair his badly broken nose, which was completely shattered by a huge right hand from the big punching Bermane Stiverne (22-1, 20 KO’s) last month in their WBC heavyweight eliminator bout on April 27th in Ontario, California.

Arreola made the mistake of standing in front of Stiverne and he paid the price by getting his nose broken and getting dropped.

Arreola ended up losing the fight by the scores of 118-109, 117-110 and 117-110. The fight was still a fairly competitive with Arreola having his moments and hurting Stiverne in the 6th, but he wasn’t able to maintain his aggression for any length of time due to his breathing problems due to his broken nose.

Kell Brook faces Carson Jones on 7/13 in UK

brook42by Scott Gilfoid: #7 WBO, welterweight contender Kell Brook (29-0, 19 KO’s) faces Carson Jones (35-9-3, 25 KO’s) on July 13th in a fight that should tell us what we need to know about the talent and the destiny of the 27-year-old Brook when he faces Jones at the Craven Park Stadium, Hull, Yorkshire, UK.

Brook got a gift 12 round majority decision over Jones last year in July. After the fight, Brook was blabbering a mile a minute about excuse about not being in the best of shape.

That excuse can only be used once, and if he tries that one after the rematch with Jones in July, I don’t see anyone buying it, especially with Brook and his promoter Eddie Hearn both saying his stamina problem is officially fixed.

Mayweather-Khan & Canelo-Cotto would be perfect for September 14th

floyd#91By Dan Ambrose: Instead of Floyd Mayweather Jr. facing WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez on September 14th in a fight that most casual boxing fans wouldn’t appreciate because they’ve never heard of Canelo before, Mayweather and Showtime should instead use the date for a double-header of Mayweather facing Amir Khan in the UK in London, and Canelo battling Miguel Cotto in Las Vegas, Nevada without open scoring to mess it up like Canelo’s last fight with Austin Trout.

I think this is the best possible scenario that could be put together by Golden Boy. The winner of the two fights would then face each other on the Mexican holiday Cinco de Mayo in 2014.

Pacquiao vs. Rios: Will fans pay to see Manny lose to Brandon?

pac87By Chris Williams: On paper the November 23rd fight between Manny Pacquiao and Brandon Rios in Macau, China isn’t particularly interesting one. Rios just got beat and got a questionable win over Richard Abril last year in February.

In effect, Rios has lost two out of his last three fights if you count his win over Abril as really being a loss as many boxing fans do. And Pacquiao has lost his last two fights and is coming off of a 6th round knockout loss to Juan Manuel Marquez last December.

Under normal circumstances a fight like Pacquiao-Rios would be lucky if it drew 600,000 buys because Rios doesn’t have a large fan base as of yet, and there’s questions about whether he ever will. However, the fight can still draw huge numbers from curious boxing fans wanting to see Pacquiao get knocked out by Rios.

Will the Middleweight/ Super Middleweight/ Light Heavyweight Boxers dominate P4P during the next five years?

ward47by Nick Hagan: The middleweight/Super middleweight and Light Heavyweight divisions were the elite divisions, from the mid 1990’s up to 2008 (when Joe Calzaghe retired). The world of boxing was blessed with Roy Jones Junior who had incredible fast hand speed, very hard hitting and exceptionally exciting to watch. I prefer, like most to remember Jones’s career up to 2003 (his win against Antonio Tarver). Up to this point he was simply unbeatable.

Then there was Bernard Hopkins who went unbeaten for over ten years and twenty world title defences. Bhop fought the best and beat the best during this time period. Bhop has come under criticism through his career for not always being the most exciting of boxers, however there is no denying that he was arguably the most technically gifted boxer of his generation. Any boxer who has wins against Oscar De La Hoya, Felix Trinidad and Winky Wright etc is exceptional.

Mares wants Rigondeaux

rigondeaux111`By Chris Williams: The Golden Boy promoted WBC featherweight champion Abner Mares (26-0-1, 14 KO’s) says he wants to face WBA/WBO super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux next if the fight can be put together successful.

Mares, 27, defeated former WBC featherweight champion Daniel Ponce De Leon earlier this month in a 9th round stoppage on May 4th. It was an impressive performance Mares, as he walked through a lot of hard punches from De Leon before finally halting him in the 9th round.

Mares said to Fightnews.com “I am ready to face Guillermo Rigondeaux among others.”

The undefeated heavyweights, bright futures or inevitable declines?

fury43323By Scott Bells: It says a lot when promoters have to pad out fighters records to ensure they remain unbeaten simply due to the fact that the two who sit at the top of the tree (The Klitschkos) are so much better than the rest.

This is what, in my opinion, many promoters are doing as there is clearly a number of grades of fighters in the heavyweight division; some can make it to the top and others will not recover from the inevitable first career loss that most, if not all, will suffer to a Klitschko or a Haye type on the way through.
Let’s break them down…..
