Olusegun Ajose and Hank Lundy fight on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights on 7/19

lundy453By Allan Fox: Hank Lundy (22-3-1, 11 KO’s) will be trying to halt his 2-fight losing streak this Friday night against light welterweight contender Ajose Olusegun (31-1, 14 KO’s) in a scheduled 10 round bout at the Rockingham Park, Salem, in New Hampshire, USA.

Just last year, 29-year-old Lundy had been trying to get a fight against WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner, but he was ignored by him. Lundy has since lost his last two fights against Raymundo Beltran and Viktor Postol.

There’s no change of Lundy getting a fight against Broner now, if there ever was one. Lundy is now fighting at light welterweight, but he didn’t look good in his first fight at that weight against Postol last March.

Chavez Jr. to face Vera at 168 on September 7th in Los Angeles, California

chavez922By Dan Ambrose: Tickets for the September 7th fight between former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32 KO’s) and #1 WBO, Brian Vera (23-6, 14 KOs) are going on sale this Friday, July 19th, for their September 7th fight at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.

Dan Rafael is reporting that the fight will be staged at 168 lbs. in order to make it easy for Chavez Jr. to make weight, as he’s been out of the ring since last year when he was beaten by Sergio Martinez by a 12 round unanimous decision.

Chavez Jr. has put on a great deal of weight in the time out of the ring and there are questions whether he can even make 168 at this point even with drastic dehydrating to lose 20+ pounds.

Lee Selby – Rising Star passes Toughest Test

selby11By Mohummad Humza Elahi: Firstly, this is a response to Scott Gilfoid’s article because even though it was clearly written to incite a reaction, I believe the hyperbole is completely unjustified. Lee Selby (now 16-1, 6 KO’s) passed his toughest test last night against #4 WBC Viorel Simion (now (16-1, 7 KO’s) to capture the Intercontinental version of the featherweight belt in front of a great crowd in Hull. Firstly, let me point something out. Both fighters wake up today with practically identical records, what separates them is an extra KO for Simion and a 5 year advantage for Selby.

This alone should tell you all you need to know about where Selby currently lies in terms of both his own progression and his standing in the world rankings. The fight itself was a scrappy one for Selby; he was put under constant pressure and got tagged with more than a few punches, especially in the later rounds. However, the first 6 rounds where a shutout and he was frustrating Simion with good movement and slipping whilst trying to keep him at bay with the jab.

Selby decisions Simion, but struggles and looks poor

selby544By Scott Gilfoid: Lee Selby (16-1, 6 KO’s) came down to earth tonight in winning a closer than expected 12 round unanimous decision over WBC International featherweight champion Viorel Simion (16-1, 7 KO’s) on the undercard of the Kell Brook vs. Carson Jones fight at the Craven Park Stadium, Hull, Yorkshire, United Kingdom. The final judges had the fight scored 118-110, 115-113 and 116-112. I agreed with the 115-113 score. It was a very, very close fight.

Selby really fell apart in the last four rounds of the fight, and looked like he was hurt in the 11th and not competitive in the 12th. Simion, 31, had a better engine and he really wore Selby down with his relentless pressure.

Hughie Fury stops Perkovic, in sloppy performance

By Scott Gilfoid: Undefeated heavyweight prospect Hughie Fury (7-0, 5 KO’s) stopped 39-year-old journeyman Ivica Perkovic (19-21, 14 KO’s) in a 5th round retirement on Friday night at the Fairways Hotel in Dundalk, Ireland. The heavy set Perkovic failed to come out for the 6th round after taking a barrage of body shots from the 6’6” Fury in the 5th round. Fury looked like a slow plodder in the fight, and nothing like what you’d like to see from a young heavyweight. He didn’t look like a young Wladimir Klitschko, Lennox Lewis or Deontay Wilder.

Avalos beats Francisco; Tapia stops Han

avalos300By Jim Dower: Super bantamweight contender Chris Avalos (23-2, 16 KO’s) defeated Drian Francisco (24-2-1, 19 KO’s) by a 10 round unanimous decision on Friday night at the on Friday night in a war at the Texas Station Casino, Las in Vegas, Nevada, USA. The final judges’ scores were 96-94, 97-93 and 97-93.

Avalos, 23, threw twice as many punches as Francisco and landed almost twice as many shots as well. However, Francisco landed the cleaner and arguably the harder shots all night long and if not for the fact that Avalos was that busier fighter, Francisco would have won. Avalos was the bigger, heavier, and younger fighter and that seemed to give him an edge in this fight.

Carson Jones vs. Kell Brook this Saturday, July 13th in UK

brook123By Scott Gilfoid: Carson Jones (35-9-3, 25 KO’s) and Kell Brook (29-0, 19 KO’s) will be facing each other in a rematch this Saturday night at the Craven Park Stadium, Yorkshire, UK. Jones, 26, is promising to spoil the atmosphere for the 27-year-old Brook by beating him in front of his own fans and leaving him an unhappy camper.

Jones said at their final press conference “There’s going to be a lot of sad faces after the fight guaranteed. You’re going to be one of them…If he dies, he dies.”

The last line seemed to stun Brook and his promoter Eddie Hearn because both of them looked in shock after Jones uttered it.
