Buglioni defeats Castaneda; Saunders stops Bloyer; Chisora destroys Lobjanidze

buglioniBy Scott Gilfoid: In perhaps the best performance on the card, undefeated super middleweight Jamie Cox (19-0, 11 KOs) destroyed Blas Miguel Martinez (21-8-1, 12 KOs) by a 1st round knockout to capture the vacant WBO European super middleweight title on Friday night at the Wembley Arena in London, UK.

Cox dropped Martinez with a powerful right to the body. The fight was then halted. Cox was punching with a lot of power and looked fast.

Saunders not interested in Golovkin bout

saunders67By Scott Gilfoid: If #1 WBO Billy Joe Saunders (21-0, 11 KOs) defeats WBO middleweight champion Andy Lee (34-2-1, 24 KOs) in their fight on September 19th, there’s a good chance that we won’t be seeing the 25-year-old Saunders facing WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin in a unification fight.

Saunders says he flat out isn’t interested in facing the hard hitting Golokvin. However, Saunders says he’d take the fight with him if he were offered a ton of money, but apart from that, he wouldn’t be all that interested in facing the Kazakhstan star. This is unfortunate for Golovkin and for the fans because if Saunders beats Lee, which is a possibility, it probably means no unification fight.

Showdown at Thomond Park: Andy Lee vs. Billy Joe Saunders

lee1By Daniel Reed: I’ve never had a fighter that I’ve rated higher. To be good is one thing but to be great takes a great passion for what you do and Andy loves to fight. He is the complete package – good looking, intelligent, explosive power, physically structured to be a great fighter.”

Back when he was first coming up as a prospect, Emanuel Steward would rave and brag about Lee’s potential and talent. Coming from a man deservedly held in such high esteem as Steward, these words meant everything to Lee.

Billy Joe Saunders in stay busy fight on July 11th

saunders5533By Scott Gilfoid #1 WBO middleweight contender Billy Joe Saunders (21-0, 11 KOs) will be getting in a stay busy fight on July 11th against an opponent still to be determined at the Velodrome, in Manchester, UK. The idea is to get the 25-year-old Saunders some work in to get him ready for his September 19th title shot against WBO World middleweight champion Andy Lee (34-2-1, 24 KOs) at Thomond Park Stadium, Limerick, Ireland.

Saunders hasn’t fought since last November when he defeated Chris Eubank Jr. by a 12 round split decision at the ExCel Arena in London, UK. In looking at how badly Saunders gassed out in the 2nd half of that fight, I think it would have been a good idea to keep Saunders in training camp up until now because he really looked terrible with the way that he fell apart over the last six rounds of the fight.

Andy Lee to face Billy Joe Saunders on September 19th

By Scott Gilfoid: On September 19th, 31-year-old WBO middleweight title holder Andy Lee (34-2-1, 24 KOs) will be defending his WBO title against his #1 challenger Billy Joe Saunders (21-0, 11 KOs) at the Thomond Park Stadium in Limerick, Ireland. It’s not a great fight as far as the U.S boxing fans go, but it’s a match-up that will interest the UK fans.

In reality, this is more of a contender fight rather than a champion defending his title against a challenger.

Andy Lee vs. Billy Joe Saunders possible for September 5th in London, UK

lee1By Scott Gilfoid: After fighting to a 12 round draw against Peter Quillin in his first defense of his title last April, WBO middleweight champion Andy Lee (34-2-1, 24 KOs) will be moving on to make a defense of his title against his #1 WBO Billy Joe Saunders (21-0, 11 KOs) on September 5th at a still to be determined venue in London, UK.

There’s obviously still unfinished business for Lee against Quillin, but it looks like Lee has decided to go in another direction rather than take a big risk against the hard hitting Quillin in a second bout.

Billy Joe Saunders passes up N’Dam fight, wants Lee-Quillin winner

saunders67By Scott Gilfoid: #1 WBO middleweight contender Billy Joe Saunders (21-0, 11 KOs) passed up a fight against Hassan N’Dam in what would have been a battle for the vacant IBF 160 pound title. Instead of taking that fight, Saunders wants to face the winner of the April 11th bout between WBO middleweight champion Andy Lee and former WBO champion Peter Quillin.

Saunders is hoping that Lee will beat Quillin so that it sets up what would likely be a nice money fight between Saunders and Lee. The only problem with this idea is that Lee is likely to get beaten by Quillin, which means that instead of Saunders facing Lee, he’ll be fighting the hard hitting Quillin for the WBO title.

Billy Joe Saunders: I believe I can beat Peter Quillin

saunders5533By Scott Gilfoid: #1 WBO 160lb contender Billy Joe Saunders agreed to step aside in order to let American talent Peter Quillin (31-0, 22 KOs) challenge WBO middleweight belt holder Andy Lee (34-2, 24 KOs) for his WBO strap on April 11th. Saunders is said to have gotten a six-figure payment to step aside so that the 31-year-old Quillin could challenge for Lee’s title belt.

Saunders sees the move as potentially setting up a fight between him and Lee later on this year with Lee’s WBO belt being up for grabs in the fight.

Andy Lee vs. Peter Quillin for the WBO 160lb title, Saunders to step aside

lee91By Scott Gilfoid: Former WBO 160lb champion Peter Quillin (31-0, 22 KOs) will be facing WBO middleweight champion Andy Lee (34-2, 24 KOs) for his WBO title, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN. #1 WBO contender Billy Joe Saunders has stepped aside in order to let the Quillin-Lee fight to go ahead.

Some boxing fans might be upset to learn that the 31-year-old Quillin is getting immediate title shot at the WBO belt after he recently vacated his WBO title when he was in the position where he had to defend it against his then #1 WBO contender Matt Karobov.

Andy Lee ordered by WBO to start negotiations with Billy Joe Saunders for March clash

lee2By Scott Gilfoid: WBO middleweight champion Andy Lee (34-2, 24 KOs) got some bad news today. Instead of the 30-year-old Lee being able to take an optional title defense against a fringe contender in Ireland, Lee will need to start negotiations with #1 WBO Billy Joe Saunders (21-0, 1 KOs) for a fight that will likely take place in March, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN.

Lee has until January 12th to try and make a deal with the 25-year-old Saunders. If he fails to make a deal by this date, then it’ll go to purse bids and who knows what’ll happen then.
