Tarver accepts Dillian Whyte’s challenge

By Scott Gilfoid: Former undisputed light heavyweight champion Antonio Tarver (31-6-1, 22 KOs) has accepted the invitation by British heavyweight Dillian Whyte (17-1, 14 KOs) to come over to the UK and fight him.

The southpaw Tarver, 47, says he’ll come over to the UK and shut Whyte up. Whyte has a fight coming up this month on July 30 at the First Direct Arena in Leeds. It’s a good gamble on Tarver’s part in taking the Whyte fight, because if he whips him, then he’ll be in a great position for a big payday title shot against IBF heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua.

Dillian Whyte interested in Antonio Tarver fight

By Scott Gilfoid: Heavyweight prospect Dillian Whyte (17-1, 14 KOs) is in need of an opponent for his next fight date on July 30 at the First Direct Arena in Leeds. Whyte says he’s be interested in fighting 47-year-old former light heavyweight world champion Antonio Tarver (31-6-1, 22 KOs) on that fight card.

That would obviously be a short notice thing for Tarver if he were to take the 28-year-old Whyte up on his offer. It’s hard to imagine Tarver agreeing to the fight under those kind of circumstances, but it’s always possible.

Tarver is a pretty fearless guy. Whyte needs to think twice about taking a veteran like Tarver, because I believe he would lose this fight. Whyte still doesn’t seem to have regained the use of his left arm after undergoing shoulder surgery last December.

Tarver: I’m ready for Wladimir Klitschko!

150814_Fights_2172(Photo credit: Ed Diller/DiBella Entertainment) By Scott Gilfoid: No.9 WBA heavyweight contender Antonio Tarver (31-6-1, 22 KOs) came up empty last Friday night in fighting to a 12 round draw against 39-year-old Steve “USS” Cunningham (28-7-1, 13 KOs) in their fight on Premier Boxing Champions on Spike TV from the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

Tarver, 46, came into the fight needing a big win to get him pushed up closer to the top five so that he could lure IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (64-3, 53 KOs) into fighting him. But instead of getting a win, Tarver had to settle for getting a 12 round draw against Cunningham by the scores of 115-113 for Cunningham, 115-113 for Tarver, and 114-114.

Deontay Wilder: There’s no way Tarver would hang in there with the Bronzebomber

1-DEONTAY WILDER VICTORY-06132015-5320By Scott Gilfoid: WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (34-0, 33 KOs) saw former light heavyweight champion Antonio Tarver (31-6-1, 22 KOs) struggle to a 12 round draw last Friday night in his fight against former IBF cruiserweight champion Steve “USS” Cunningham (28-7-1, 13 KOs) at the Prudential Center, in Newark, New Jersey, USA.

While Deontay, 6’7”, gave the 46-year-old Tarver credit for being able to hang in there with the fast 204lb Cunningham, Wilder thinks that there’s no way that Tarver would have been able to go the distance with him had he been in there with him rather than Cunningham.

Tarver-Cunningham fight to draw; Glowacki stops Huck in 11th

150814_Fights_1961(Photo credit: Ed Diller/DiBella Entertainment) By Jim Dower: In a disappointing outcome, former light heavyweight champion Antonio Tarver (31-6-1, 22 KOs) fought to a 12 round draw against former IBF cruiserweight champion Steve Cunningham (28-7-1, 13 KOs) on Friday night on Premier Boxing Champions on Spike TV at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. The final judges’ scores were 115-113 for Cunningham, 115-114 for Tarver, and 114-114.

After witnessing an exciting fight in the co-feature between Marco Huck and Krzyzstof Glowacki, the boxing fans were kind of spoiled by the time the Tarver-Cunningham fight took place for the main event. The fans expected nonstop action, but unfortunately the 46-year-old Tarver was only capable of throwing occasional hard left hand power shots. Before long, the crowd started booing the lack of action, and they pretty much continued to boo off and on from the 2nd round until the 12th.

Tarver-Cunningham & Huck-Glowacki tonight on PBC on Spike TV

150813_Weighins_852(Photo credit: Ed Diller/DiBella Entertainment) By Allan Fox: In a crucial fight for him, former 175lb world champion Antonio Tarver (31-6, 22 KOs) will be back in the ring tonight against #6 IBF heavyweight contender Steve “USS” Cunningham (28-7, 13 KOs) on Premier Boxing Champions on Spike TV from the Prudential Center, in Newark, New Jersey.

Tarver, 46, cannot lose this fight if he wants a fight against IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko before he steps away from the game. If Tarver loses the fight, then he might as well consider retirement because it’ll take too long for him to rebuild after a loss of this nature.

Weights: Tarver 217, Cunningham 204; Huck 199, Glowacki 198

150813_Weighins_896(Photo credit: Ed Diller/DiBella Entertainment) By Jim Dower: Former light heavyweight champion Antonio Tarver (31-6, 22 KOs) weighed in on Thursday for his fight at heavyweight this Friday night against former IBF cruiserweight champion Steve Cunningham (28-7, 13 KOs) in their fight on Premier Boxing Champions on Spike TV at the Prudential Center, in Newark, New Jersey. Tarver weighed in at a soft-looking 217lbs. For his part, Cunningham was a trim 204lbs, and looked more like a cruiserweight than a heavyweight.

Tarver, ##9 WBA, is hoping to get in line for a world title shot against IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko in 2016. Cunningham, #6 IBF, is ranked a little higher than Tarver, but both of these guys are going to need to count on the 39-year-old Wladimir picking them out in a voluntary defense if they want to get a world title shot next year. Neither of them is going to get pushed up to the No.1 rankings by the IBF or WBA based on what they do in this fight on Friday night.

Tyson Fury has no chance of beating Klitschko, says Tarver

wlad85By Scott Gilfoid: Former light heavyweight world champion Antonio Tarver is giving #1 WBO contender Tyson Fury (24-0, 18 KOs) absolutely no chance at all of beating IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight world champion Wladimir Klitschko (64-3, 53 KOs) in their fight on October 24th at the ESPRIT arena, Düsseldorf, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany. Tarver notes that Klitschko isn’t the same fighter that he once was, but he still sees him as way too good for the likes of Tyson Fury.

It’s hard to disagree with Tarver about Klitschko being too good, because even though he’s starting to look like a shot fighter at 39, he can still pack a big punch and move really well around the ring. There’s nothing wrong with Wladimir’s punching power, his excellent jab and his mobility.
