Tarver vs. Jones Jr. II: You got any excuses tonight Roy?

By Gerardo Granados: Back in May 15 of 2004 at the Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas Nevada a rematch took place. On the first bout the defending WBC / WBA / IBO light heavyweight champion Antonio Tarver defeated former undisputed light heavyweight champion Roy Jones Jr who previously had conquered the heavyweight division championship when he defeated John Ruiz for the WBA strap.

Jones Jr then moved back down to 175 and argued he had struggled to make weight and that was the reason why he lost to Tarver.

Tarver knocked out Jones Jr in 2 rounds and received the KO of the year award by The Ring Magazine and Boxingnews24.

After the final instructions given by referee Jay Nady he asked the fighters if they had any questions so Tarver made a question that will hardly be forgotten by fight fans. Maybe if a rematch of the fight of the century (unavoidable due promoter’s greed) is made Floyd Mayweather could also ask Manny Pacquiao the very same question.

Jones was never the same after coming down from 193 pounds, his outstanding reflexes diminished and somehow his chin was affected. Maybe he should have stayed at the heavyweight division but the rest of the top heavies might have been too much for him to handle. Perhaps his best option would have been to go down to the cruiserweight division; but for certain the big money fights were at 175 and not at 200 so that might be the main reason why he chose to move back down.

Currently both veterans are still active, 46 years old Antonio Tarver campaigns at the heavyweight division meanwhile 46 years old Roy Jones Jr at the cruiserweight limit.

Do the readers remember Tarver´s question?
