Is Pacquiao’s sparring with Chavez Jr., Khan and Martirosyan more for their benefit than his?

Image: Is Pacquiao’s sparring with Chavez Jr., Khan and Martirosyan more for their benefit than his?By Chris Williams: I know trainer Freddie Roach has personally picked out three of his fighters – Amir Khan, Vanes Martirosyan and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. – to spar with Manny Pacquiao to get him prepared for Antonio Margarito on November 13th, but is this situation of Pacquiao doing Roach a favor by sparring with these guys rather than Pacquiao getting any real benefit out of it? Let’s be honest here. Chavez, Khan and Martirosyan are nothing like Margarito. I see absolutely nothing in common with them and the Mexican warrior in their style of fighting.

Khan plans on fighting Maidana, the Alexander-Bradley winner and then Mayweather and Pacquiao

Image: Khan plans on fighting Maidana, the Alexander-Bradley winner and then Mayweather and PacquiaoBy William Mackay: You can’t say that WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (23-1, 17 KO’s) lacks for a grand plan for his future. Khan has an upcoming fight with WBA light welterweight interim champion Marcos Maidana (29-1, 27 KO’s) on December 11th. Khan then plans on fighting the winner of the proposed bout between light welterweight champions Devon Alexander and Timothy Bradley in January. Following that, Khan wants to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao. It almost sounds like a dream of a child, because it seems to unlikely to happen. Who knows? Maybe Khan can still get fights against all of those aforementioned fighters even if he’s beaten by each one of them.

Roach offering $1000 if Chavez Jr., Martirosyan and Khan can knock Pacquiao down in sparring

Image: Roach offering $1000 if Chavez Jr., Martirosyan and Khan can knock Pacquiao down in sparringBy Chris Williams: Trainer Freddie Roach is offering $1000 if his fighters Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Vanes Martirosyan and Amir Khan can knock Manny Pacquiao down in sparring in the Philippines. This has got to be the best sparring partners that a fighter could ever hope to get to help get ready for the Antonio Margarito bout on November 13th. But why so cheap? $1000 is nothing for Khan and Chavez. I think Roach needs to up that to $20,000, because those guys are used to making big bucks int their fights and waving $1000 under their noses may not get the desired effect that Roach wants.

Khan says he’s going to hit and run against Maidana

Image: Khan says he's going to hit and run against MaidanaBy William Mackay: At the Los Angeles press conference this week, WBA light welterweight champion said he plans on coming out with a different strategy by throwing power punches for his December 11th fight against Argentinian knockout artist Marcos Maidana (29-1, 27 KO’s) . Khan said “I’m going to do something different in this fight, something nobody’s ever seen me do. I’m changing my style. I’m going to come in and be the big puncher. This fight is going to be explosive.” While there were a few of Khan’s loyal fans that bought into that line, many more fans saw that as a decoy statement by Khan to throw Maidana off by making him train for a Khan that’s going to be coming right at him.

Khan plans on retiring in five years at 28

Image: Khan plans on retiring in five years at 28By Sean McDaniel: Amir Khan (23-1, 17 KO’s) told the BBC Radio Manchester that he plans on retiring from boxing in only five more years, which would put Khan at 28 when he hangs up his gloves. Khan is currently the WBA light welterweight champion and has defended the title twice since capturing the belt last year in a 12 round decision against Andriy Kotelnik. Khan said “By the time I’m 28, that’s the time for me to hang my gloves up and stay with my family. I’m going to walk out of this sport the way I walked in and that’s what I want to tell other people who box. You don’t want to walk out of the sport brain dead.”

Khan predicts Pacquiao to stop Margarito in the 8th or 9th round

By Chris Williams: For what it’s worth, WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan is picking his buddy Manny Pacquiao (51-3-2, 38 KO’s) to stop Antonio Margarito (38-6, 27 KO’s) in the 8th or 9th round next month in their fight on November 13th. In an article at Abs-cbnnews.com, Khan says this about his close friend Pacquiao: “I’m totally behind Manny Pacquiao. I think Manny is the best fighter in the world. Whoever you put in front of Manny Pacquiao, I think Manny will beat easily. He’s got the skill, he’s got the speed, he’s got the footwork. This fight I think Manny will stop him maybe in round eight or round nine.” Oh brother, Khan is going a bit overboard. I’m cool with his prediction.

Khan: “I hit just as hard [as Maidana] with speed”

Image: Khan: "I hit just as hard [as Maidana] with speed"By William Mackay: WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (23-1, 17 KO’s) believes he can punch as hard as his opponent Marcos Maidana (29-1, 27 Ko’s), who Khan will be facing on December 11th at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada. In the press conference yesterday, Khan had this to say about fighting Maidana: “We know exactly what to do and how to beat him. People say he [Maidana] is a big hitter, but I hit just as hard with speed. I think I am going to come in as a bigger puncher. I have the power to put him down.” I kind of doubt it. Khan has always been a slapper. He doesn’t produce knockouts from a single punch like Maidana. Most of Khan’s knockouts come from throwing flurries against B level opposition.

Victor Ortiz vs. Andriy Kotelnik in the works for Khan-Maidana HBO card on December 11th

By Jim Dower: Dan Rafael is reporting that that a fight between former World Boxing Association (WBA) light welterweight champion Andriy Kotelnik (31-4-1, 13 KO’s) and the hard hitting American Victor Ortiz (28-2-1, 22 KO’s) is in the works for the December 11th fight card with WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan vs. Marcos Maidana at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. This would be great news if this fight happens, although it’s far from a truly great fight. It’s at least better than matching Ortiz against a B level fighter.
