Image: Maidana prepared to chase Khan from round oneBy William Mackay: WBA light welterweight interim champion Marcos Maidana (29-1, 27 KO’s) has a pretty good idea what WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (23-1, 17 KO’s) will be doing on December 11th in their fight on December 11th at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Maidana expects Khan to run continuously from the 1st round and Maidana realizes he’s going to have to chase Khan if he wants to catch up to him in this fight.

In an article at Ringtv.com, Maidana says “I think I will have to work very hard to catch him. I picture the fight with him running all the time and being very defensive and counter attacking, of course. So I’ll have to chase him from round 1 on. People know about my punching power. It would be stupid for them to stand in front of me.”

Maidana is so right. Khan is likely going to be running at any chance he can get in the fight. He will be counter attacking when he thinks he has Maidana vulnerable and out of position. That’s where Maidana will have a chance to sink Khan’s ship by connecting with something big while Khan is trying to land his quick shots.

The name of the game for Maidana is timing. He has to time Khan when he comes looking to land, because it won’t be easy for Maidana to land due to Khan’s quick hands and fast feet. This is going to be like Zab Judah vs. Kostya Tszyu. In that fight, Judah was making Tszyu look bad in the 1st round with his superior speed.

In the 2nd round, Tszyu began to land some hard shots and time Judah. Finally, Tszyu sent Judah down with a perfectly timed short right hand to the head. Judah got back to his feet a little too quickly and ended up staggering around in what some people call Judah’s chicken dance.

Maidana will have to shorten his punches and load up on them the same way that Tszyu did. The good thing is that Maidana generally always fights like that. He likes to throw short power shots, and Khan is going to be at risk at all times against Maidana.

Maidana says “I know through 12 rounds that I will sooner or later have an opportunity to catch him.” That sounds kind of ominous, like he’s going to be putting a hurting on Khan once he does catch him.
