Don’t be surprised if Canelo faces Alfredo Angulo on May 4th

canelo 05By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions wants WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) to fight on the Floyd Mayweather Jr. pay per view undercard on May 4th. There’s still no word about whether they’re going to be able to get the young 22-year-old because he reportedly wants a fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. on September 14th as part of the condition for him to fight on May 4th.

If Golden Boy can get an agreement from Mayweather to face Canelo in September then we’ll be seeing him on the Mayweather undercard on May 4th, but it might not be against the guy that boxing fans want to see him fight in WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout. Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy already said Trout hadn’t done enough to deserve the Alvarez fight yet.

Will Saul Alvarez face Angulo, Maidana or Kirkland next?

alvarez434By Dan Ambrose: It’s looking like WBC junior middleweight champion Sail “Canelo” Alvarez won’t be facing WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout next judging by the comments Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer made to Sports Illustrated writer Chris Mannix this past week on twitter.

It’s unclear whether Alvarez will be fighting on May 4th, the Mexican holiday Cinco de Mayo or if he’ll be back in the ring in March against a still to be determined opponent. What does seem pretty obvious is that Alvarez won’t be facing the guy he arguably should be fighting in Austin Trout.

Angulo’s stock goes down with difficult win against Silva

006AngulovsSilvaIMG_4692(Photo credit: Tom Casino/Showtime) By Dan Ambrose: Everything was supposed to be good with Alfredo Angulo (22-2, 18 KO’s) with him coming back from a near one-year layoff and changing trainers to Virgil Hunter in the California Bay Area. Unfortunately, Angulo’s problems haven’t been taken care of by Hunter because Angulo looked like the same slow, plodding fighter that he’s been in struggling to beat a little known welterweight named Jorge Silva (19-3-2, 15 KO’s) by a less than spectacular 10 round unanimous decision on the undercard of Amir Khan vs. Carlos Molina at the Sports Arena in Los Angeles, California.

Angulo got the decision by the scores 97-93, 97-93, 97-93, but it was so ugly to watch. Angulo was taking punishment big time in the opening round, and I thought for a second there that Silva would score a knockout because Angulo was just too slow to block the incoming shots.

Khan defeats Molina; Angulo, Wilder, Santa Cruz all triumph

wilder322By Jim Dower: Amir Khan (27-3, 19 KO’s) did what many people expected him to do and that is easily defeat Carlos Molina (17-1, 7 KO’s) by a 10th round TKO in what meant as a confidence building fight for the down in his luck Khan at the Sports Arena in Los Angeles, California.

The fight was stopped after the 10th round with a badly beaten Molina still on his stool in between rounds at the request of his corner people. The fight was stopped due to Molina’s badly cut up left eye, but it was also stopped in part because Molina wasn’t throwing many punches in the last six rounds and was taking a horrendous beating from the taller Khan.

Weights: Khan-Molina, Wilder-Price, Santa Cruz-Guevara

005WilderandPriceIMG_0128(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Scott Gilfoid: Undefeated heavyweight prospect Deontay Wilder (25-0, 25 KO’s) weighed in today for his fight on Saturday night against Kelvin Price (13-0, 6 KO’s) at the Sports Arena in Los Angeles, California. The 6’7” Wilder weighed a light 223 pounds for the vacant WBC Continental Americas heavyweight title.

The fight is scheduled for only 10 rounds, but Wilder likely won’t need half of those rounds to get the 6’7” Price out of there. The weird thing about this fight is that both Wilder and Price look in incredible shape with nothing but pure muscle.

I’m not used to seeing two in shape heavyweights because much of the time heavyweights look so badly out of shape or just have weird looking physiques. These two fighters actually look like athletes.

Angulo to fight on Khan-Molina undercard on December 15th

Image: Angulo to fight on Khan-Molina undercard on December 15thBy Allan Fox: Junior middleweight Alfredo Angulo (21-2, 18 KO’s) will be back in action on December 15th on the undercard of the Carlos Molina vs. Amir Khan fight card at the Los Angeles Sport Arena against an opponent still to be determined. Dan Rafael reports that IT WON’T be the recently beaten Delvin Rodriguez.

Apparently there wasn’t enough time for Rodriguez to get ready for the fight and besides that the money’s not right.

This will give the 30-year-old Angulo a good opportunity to get some more viability, as the fight will be aired on Showtime and there’s not much on the card right now other than Khan-Molina and unbeaten heavyweight Deontay Wilder (25-0, 25 KO’s) vs. Kelvin Price (13-0, 6 KO’s).

Mares decisions Moreno; Cleverly defeats Hawk; Angulo stops Casarez; Santa Cruz crushes Zaleta

Image: Mares decisions Moreno; Cleverly defeats Hawk; Angulo stops Casarez; Santa Cruz crushes Zaleta(Photo: Showtime) By Eric Thomas: WBC super bantamweight champion Abner Mares (25-0-1, 14 KO’s) emerged victorious on Saturday night with a 12 round unanimous decision win over WBA World bantamweight champion Anselmo Moreno (33-2-1, 12 KO’s) in a fight that was for Mares’ World Boxing Council 122 pound title at the Staples Center, in Los Angeles, California, USA.

Mares was given credit for a blown call by referee Raul Caiz Jr., who credited Mares with a knockdown in the 5th round despite Mares having landed only a shot to Moreno’s buttocks. Caiz Jr. also took a point away from Moreno for pulling down on Mares’ head in the 11th round, but failed to take points away for Mares for his numerous low blows landed in the fight.

Mares-Moreno, Angulo-Casarez & Cleverly-Hawk predictions

Mares vs. Moreno

Mares weighed in at 121.8 lbs during Friday’s weigh-in and looked to be in sensational shape. He’s definitely ready for this fight and he understands that he’s going to have to put steady but intelligent pressure on the 27-year-old Moreno for the entire fight because he’s so good at moving around and being slick.

Alfredo Angulo vs. Raul Casarez on Saturday

Image: Alfredo Angulo vs. Raul Casarez on Saturday(Photo credit: Casino/Showtime) By Eric Thomas: Junior middleweight Alfred Angulo (20-2, 17 KO’s) will be fighting for the first time in a year this Saturday night against Raul Casarez (19-2, 9 KO’s) on Showtime at the Staples Center, in Los Angeles, California, USA.

Angulo, 30, hasn’t fought since last November in a disastrous 6th round TKO loss to a very limited James Kirkland. Angulo couldn’t handle Kirkland’s hand speed, which was odd given that Kirkland isn’t considered to be fast of hand. Angulo tried to knock him out in the 1st round and gassed out in a major way that you rarely see young fighters do.

Hunter: Khan isn’t having an easy time with Angulo in sparring

Image: Hunter: Khan isn't having an easy time with Angulo in sparringBy William Mackay: Apparently trainer Virgil Hunter has been using junior middleweight Alfredo Angulo (20-2, 17 KO’s) as a sparring partner to help former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (26-3, 18 KO’s) get ready for his December 15th fight against Carlos Molina (17-0, 7 KO’s) at the Sports Arena in Los Angeles, California. Khan is struggling according to Hunter.

Hunter said to esnewsreport.com “He [Angulo] puts tremendous physical and mental pressure on you and Khan isn’t having an easy time with Perro [Angulo].”
