Stevenson: Once I beat Froch I’m going to get to the next level

stevenson13243By Scott Gilfoid: #1 IBF Adonis Stevenson (19-1, 16 KO’s) believes a victory over IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch (30-2, 22 KO’s) will open a whole new world for himself in being able to get important fights. Stevenson is Froch’s IBF mandatory challenger, and the IBF has already ordered for fight negotiations to take place.

Stevenson said on his twitter “Once I beat Froch I’m going to be at another level.”

It would be nice if Stevenson could get this fight with Froch because it would help Stevenson get bigger fights, but I don’t think Froch will take the fight.

Hearn: Kessler can face Froch next if he wants it; Stevenson is the backup plan

froch457 - CopyBy Scott Gilfoid: Eddie Hearn, the promoter for IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch, cleared up some of the confusion today by saying that Mikkel Kessler is the guy that they want to fight next 100 percent. He’s the one that Froch is chomping at the bit to face next, but if he chooses not to agree to the offer made to him then Froch will choose to fight his #1 IBF mandatory challenger Adonis Stevenson.

Hearn said on his twitter “1. Carl Froch’s next fight is currently undecided. If Kessler wants it he’s got it. If not, we will most probably fight Stevenson. It can be Kessler’s WBA. It’s not about the belt; it’s about the fight, especially at this stage.”

hearn343By Scott Gilfoid: It looks like the IBF will allow IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch to bypass his mandatory challenger Adonis Stevenson to get a $2 million payday unification bout against WBA World super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler.

That’s obviously the fight that Froch will take if his promoter Eddie Hearn can negotiate the fight. However, we’re hearing that Froch is suddenly starting to show interest in facing Stevenson next instead of Kessler. This is likely a ploy to give Froch and Hearn better bargaining room in the Kessler negotiations, because I can’t for a second believe that Froch and Hearn would volunteer to face a talented fighter like Stevenson unless the fight was absolutely forced upon them.

stevenson34By Scott Gilfoid: It looks like IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch’s grand plans on facing WBA super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler next are quickly going down the drain, as RDS.ca is reporting that the negotiations are at an impasse and that now Froch’s #1 IBF mandatory challenger Adonis Stevenson could be the one that Froch faces next.

Froch has until January 15th to agree to fight Stevenson, and he reportedly no longer has the option to put off the fight with Stevenson. Froch now has decide whether he wants to keep the International Boxing Federation 168 pound strap or if he’s okay with giving it up or having it stripped from him.

stevensontBy Scott Gilfoid: With IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch (30-2, 22 KO’s) showing no signs that he’s planning on defending his title against his #1 mandatory challenger Adonis Stevenson (19-1, 16 KO’s), it’s looking like Stevenson will soon be facing unbeaten #5 IBF Thomas Oosthuizen (21-0-1, 13 KO’s) from South Africa, at least that’s according to goldengloves.co.za/boxing-news/action-hots-up-for-tommy-gun/.

The scenario would be that the 24-year-old Oosthuizen will face the power hitting Stevenson for Froch’s vacant title.

Stevenson beat Don George to become Froch’s mandatory challenger and Froch now has to fight Stevenson BEFORE he fights Lucian. Judging by what Froch’s promoter Eddie Hearn has been saying about wanting the Bute fight first, it looks like the International Boxing Federation may have to strip Froch of his title if he opts not to fight Stevenson next. Hearn said he wants to try and get an exception from the IBF to steer around the dangerous punching Stevenson, but Stevenson’s promoter Yvon Michel doesn’t see the IBF letting that happen.

Stevenson’s promoter Yvon Michel told Fightnews “It will be against Froch or whoever else if the title is vacant.”

What this means is that Stevenson isn’t going to step aside to let Froch fight former IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute or whoever else Froch’s promoter Eddie Hearn can dig up for Froch to fight instead of his mandatory challenger Stevenson.

Hearn and Froch prefer that they get Bute next, but they doubt he’ll take the fight for a variety of reasons, one of them because they think he’s not eager to get back in the ring with Froch for a second helping of defeat.

Hearn said to espn.co.uk “It will be Bute or Stevenson next, followed by Kessler and Ward. I really think Ward would come to the UK and we could do it at an open air football stadium next summer.”

The IBF has ordered Froch to fight the dangerous Stevenson after Froch’s fight next month against Yusaf Mack on November 17th, but Froch’s promoter Eddie Hearn is talking about wanting to get the IBF go grant Froch and exception so that he can face Lucian Bute, Mikkel Kessler and Andre Ward. That’s some exception, isn’t it? In other words, Stevenson would have to wait for likely for all of 2013 and even then Froch will likely retire rather than face Stevenson.

Froch is taking an optional defense next against Yusaf Mack (31-4-2, 17 KO’s) on November 17th at the Capital FM Arena, in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, United Kingdom. After that, Froch wants to take another optional defense this time against former IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute next March in Montreal, Canada as part of their contract. But usually champions are only allowed one optional defense followed by a mandatory.

The reason why the sanctioning bodies make champions do this is because if they didn’t some champions might choose to fight bottom feeders over and over again in order to milk their title instead or fighting the top contenders. Froch and Hearn don’t appear to be interested in defending against their mandatory challenger Stevenson, who recently defeated Don George in an IBF 168 pound eliminator bout.
