Abner Mares vs. Leo Santa Cruz this Saturday on PBC on ESPN

santacruz (8)By Dan Ambrose: This Saturday night on August 29th, former three division world champion Abner Mares (29-1-1, 15 KOs) will be facing former two division champion Leo Santa Cruz (30-0-1, 17 KOs) in a 12 round fight on Premier Boxing Champions on ESPN from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.

The Mares vs. Santa Cruz fight is a good one, but it’s one that would have been much better had the fight taken place in 2013 when the two of them were still being matched against quality opposition. Mares has been on the rebuilding mode with his career ever since he was knocked out in one round by Jhonny Gonzalez in August 2013.

Santa Cruz: The fans want the Santa-Cruz-Mares fight

CruzvsMares_web33(Photo credit: Craig Bennett) By Dan Ambrose: Leo Santa Cruz (30-0-1, 17 KOs) believes his fight against former three division world champion Abner Mares (29-1-1, 15 KOs) next month on August 29th is a fight that the boxing public is demanding right now despite the fight being a non-title fight in a division that neither fighter appears to be equipped to compete in.

Leo Santa Cruz to fight in August or September, wants Mares

santa cruz677By Dan Ambrose: WBC super bantamweight champion Leo Santa Cruz (30-0-1, 17 KOs) says he’ll be back inside the ring in August or September against an opponent still to be determined. Santa Cruz, 26, wants to face former three division world champion Abner Mares next, but it’s not likely that fight will take place.

The best you can hope for is that Santa Cruz at least fights a quality guy for a change after fighting four consecutive mismatches dating back to March of last year. The last quality opponent Santa Cruz fought was Cesar Seda in December 2013.

Golovkin would murder De La Hoya, says Mares

delahoya789By Dan Ambrose: Former three division world champion Abner Mares doesn’t think it’s a good idea at all for 41-year-old Oscar De La Hoya (39-6, 30 KOs) to get in the ring against unbeaten IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) for a fight.

Mares laughed at the suggestion that De La Hoya should fight the hard hitting Golovkin. Mares thinks that De La Hoya would wind up getting murdered by Golovkin if he were to face him in his comeback. For that reason, Mares suggests that De La Hoya should fight the 52-year-old Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. Mares thinks that would be a good fight. Chavez Sr. hasn’t fought in 10 years since losing a fight to Grover Wiley in September of 2005.
