1-111916-sergey-kovalev-vs-andre-ward-1173

By Yannis Mihanos: True champions have to go to hell sometimes, as we saw in last Saturday’s match between light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev and Andre Ward on HBO PPV. This may have been the most important fight of the year. Ward and Kovalev gave it their all.

The Kovalev vs. Ward fight alone didn’t let anybody down. Unfortunately, the night was spoiled by a controversial judge’s decision with Ward being given a 12 round unanimous victory by the scores 114-113, 114-113 and 114-113.

Kovalev vs. Ward: The rise of the true champion

1-kovalevwardweighin_hoganphotos4

By Yannis Mihanos: Light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev and Andre Ward will be battling tonight on HBO pay-per-view. Grit, guts, iron will, hunger, these are some of the elements that a true champion has.

To be a champion you must face another champion, that’s one thing to consider. To be a true champion is slightly but significantly different. A true champion reacts different when under pressure.

Who’s stalling Canelo vs. Golovkin and why

1-alvarez-canelo-khan (2)

By Yannis Mihanos: Opinions fluctuate about who is stalling the mega fight between Gennady “GGG” Golovkin and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Delays many times help building up momentum and increase pay-per-views, but not all the time. I describe todays boxing with the acronym SEB (Sport-Entertainment-Business). Each of these parts work for a different purpose.

Many problems occur when promoters discover new stars. They tend to protect them mainly for selfish reasons. A fighter knows what to do and a promoter knows what to do. When these two do their job as they are supposed to be then the results are also as they are supposed to be: great.

Brook vs. Golovkin = David vs. Goliath?

Image: Brook vs. Golovkin = David vs. Goliath?

By Yannis Mihanos: It always feels great to watch encounters that bring in mind the mythical battle of David vs. Goliath, the tiny vs. the giant. IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (36-0, 25 KO’s) is the rising star from England who dares to challenge the top gun of the middleweight division, one of the most feared fighters of our time: Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (35-0, 32 KO’s).

Golovkin and Brook will be fighting on September 10 at the O2 Arena in London, England. Their fight will be televised on HBO Championship Boxing in the States and on Sky Box Office pay-per-view in the UK.

Is Tyson Fury a mad genius?

fury7377

By Yannis Mihanos: What’s happening to Tyson Fury? He is now the IBO/WBA.WBO heavyweight champion of the world but he doesn’t behave like one in the minds of many boxing fans. Fury will be fighting a rematch next month against Wladimir Klitschko on July 9 at the Manchester Arena in Manchester, UK.

Is he insane biting the hand that feeds him? Is Fury actually damaging the world of boxing? Well, maybe yes maybe not.

Tyson Fury (25-0, 18 KOs) appears as unconventional and as unpredictable as he can be. It seems that Fury has one step in this reality and one step in his reality.

Canelo and Chavez Jr: How weight dictates their careers

Image: Canelo and Chavez Jr: How weight dictates their careers

By Yannis Mihanos: In this article I will speak specifically about two famous Mexican fighters Saul Canelo Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

Starting from the younger one, Canelo a natural middleweight, he prefers to fight in lighter divisions, going down the scales and going up in the day of the fight. It seems that he has developed a science over it in dehydrating to fight at lower weights. Virgil Hunter, the trainer for Amir Khan, joked about it in an interview with HBO’s Max Kellerman and said that he would so much wish to be a fly on the wall and watch how Canelo rehydrates all this weight back.

Is Golovkin’s unbeaten record a problem for him?

Image: Is Golovkin's unbeaten record a problem for him?By Yannis Mihanos: A beaten man many think they can beat but an unbeaten man very few can. Gennady “GGG” Golovkin remains unbeaten (35-0) and is at the top spot in the middleweight division. For many Golovkin is a boxing genius one that doesn’t appear so often in boxing.

Problem is that other boxing stars do not want to face him. Even the recently retired Floyd Mayweather Jr. never even considered to face him in the ring, it was too much the risk so he faced a light challenge in the face of Andre Berto.
