Mayweather-Canelo: Boxing Fans are ready to find out who is “The One”

Mayweather and Canelo face off(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Omar Torres: I managed to attend the first Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez press conference yesterday in times square NYC. In a hot and humid day in New York City everyone waited an hour more of the original starting time at which time Canelo and Mayweather finally made their entrance on stage.

Fans where definitely cheering more for Canelo than Mayweather and you can see Mexican flags being waived all over the place. Despite what’s had been said about Mayweather looking scared of Canelo when they where at the studio recording promos for the fight, I saw Floyd calm and happy I didn’t see any distress from him at all not even in the face-off.

Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr. vs. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez September 14th, MGM Grand, Los Vegas

alvarez545By Omar Torres: It’s finally happening, a mega fight in boxing between Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr. vs. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez on September 14th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. This fight could have the chance to match the previous record set by Oscar De La Hoya vs. Mayweather in 2007, and this match can help boxing rise again, at least here in the U.S.

It’s too bad that we might never see Mayweather – Manny Pacquiao, but at least we get to see this very interesting fight. Mayweather is finally going to be taking on a powerful young fighter in the peek of his career. This would be the first time Floyd faces a strong young stud such as Canelo in years. Canelo has never faced an opponent with the supreme boxing skills such as Floyd “Money” Mayweather, Austin Trout being the closest.

Hometown advantage in boxing?

froch644By Omar Torres: IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch (31-2, 22 KO’s) has been quoted saying that he can beat Andre Ward in his hometown of England. But last I remember a squared circle is a squared circle where ever it is. I understand that the fans are behind their hometown hero and may fuel him to win, but I think it can work the other way around for the visiting boxer.

He can be fueled by the boo’s and the hate and also with the idea of knocking out the hometown hero in front of his own fans. I think when it comes to boxing It’s non-sense to say that you can beat someone in your home turf because a boxers skill sets are the same where ever they go.

Guerrero needs to KO Mayweather to win

guerrero123By Omar Torres: We all know that 43 fighters have stepped up and failed to K.O Floyd Mayweather (43-0 26KO) let alone beat the guy. In order for Robert Guerrero (31-1-1 18KO) to get his hand raised on May 4th in the MGM Grand arena he needs to KO Mayweather Jr.

Mayweather has superb defense rivaled by none, and that has kept him from being knocked out as fighters have a hard time finding his face. One promising thing for Guerrero though is that when Floyd Mayweather had his last fight with Miguel Cotto nearly a year ago, a lot of people saw Cotto giving Mayweather a run for his money. Some experts even believe that Mayweather is beginning to show signs of slowing down. Cotto was able to find openings to hit Floyd more that Floyd is used to.

Pacquiao interested in fighting Marquez in China

pac67By Omar Torres: Yahoo! sports reports that Manny Pacquiao prefers to have his fifth fight against Juan Manuel Marquez to take place at the off shore Chinese gambling resort of Macau in China. Michael Koncz told Yahoo! Sports, the 39.6 percent tax rate Pacquiao would face if he were to fight in the U.S. makes a Las Vegas “a no go.”

I strongly believe that Juan Manuel Marquez is not going to like the idea of having to fight in China or in Asia much. The time zones are different and some of the fans from Mexico and U.S won’t be able to catch the fight live, only if your willing to watch it early in the morning with a cup of coffee.

rodriguez432By Omar Torres: Edwin Rodriguez (22-0 15 KOs) was unable to join the 2008 Olympics because of the birth of his premature twins who where born at just 23 weeks. Now Edwin is one of the top prospects in professional boxing from the super middleweight division and is working his way up the rankings.

On March 30th at the Monte Carlo casino and resort in Monte Carlo, Monaco, Rodriguez will finally get his shot at recognition when he fights in a 4-man tournament, with the winner rewarded with 1 million dolors. The semifinals will take place March 30th with Edwin Rodriguez (22-0, 15 KOs) going up against Ezequiel Osvaldo Maderna (19-0, 13 KOs) in a 10-round super middleweight bout and Zsolt Erdei (33-0, 18 KOs) against Denis Grachev (12-1-1, 8 KOs) in a 10-round light heavyweight fight.

Marquez not interested in 5th fight with Pacquiao: Where do they go next?

marquez4567By Omar Torres: It has recently been reported that Juan Manuel Marquez is passing up on a fifth fight with Manny Pacquiao. If this is in fact Marquez’s final decision, then it’s disappointing as fans would’ve loved to see these two living legends square off once again.

Marquez has reportedly said that he has proven his point with Pacman and there is no need to fight him a fifth time as the business has been settled. So that opens up some questions as far as where both Pacquiao and Marquez go from here if a fifth fight doesn’t happen. Marquez seems to be leaning towards retirement soon and I think he at least has one more meaningful fight left in him, and that is to avenge his loss against Floyd Mayweather Jr.
