Mayweather-Canelo catch-weight controversy

canelo55by James Le Blanc: Who saw Dan Rafael set the record straight on ESPN First Take about the recent ‘boxing is dead’ assessment. I was also particularly happy to see him call out Skip Bayless for not knowing what a catch-weight was and starting a controversy over it. The catch-weight agreement between Floyd Mayweather and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez has had particular attention because Mayweather criticized his rival Manny Pacquiao for forcing his fighters to fight at catch weights.

Just recently Canelo Alvarez has come out and said not only did Mayweather demand the catch weight, he tried to have him fight as low as 150 when fighting at the welterweight limit was out of the question for Canelo. Canelo then went on to say Floyd wanted a rehydration clause in which Canelo would have a limit to what he weighed the actual day of the fight.

The Sport of Boxing deserves the backlash

by James Le Blanc: Recently on the show Pardon the Interruption Michael Wilbon stated that after Floyd Mayweather retires, it’s over for boxing. Boxing journalist Dan Rafael took to twitter to imply that anyone that says the sport of boxing is dead is just ignorant and lazy. I myself thought the year of 2013 would be a year full of unwanted rematches and dead on arrival mismatches but I couldn’t be farther from the truth.

Smooth Sailing for Mayweather post Canelo mega-fight?

mayweather54By James Le Blanc/@James_theGrad: Remarkably, this is Floyd Mayweather Jr’s first ever unification bout in which he will be defending his WBA Light Middleweight title and attempting to relieve Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) of his WBC title. While Alvarez has size advantage, more power in his punch, he is still conceived as a heavy underdog against the brilliant Mayweather who has shown an uncanny ability to adapt to every opponent he has faced who gave him problems early on in the fight.

What has made Mayweather so intriguing to me in the past few months has been his contract with Showtime in which he signed to a 6 fight deal. So no retirement, no long break, no long wait to see Floyd in the ring again, and after this fight with Canelo, we can expect to see Floyd in the ring at least 4 more times in the next two years.

Scenario not so farfetched 2

broner66By James Le Blanc/@James_theGrad Back in March of this year I wrote an article explaining the inevitability of a matchup between Adrien Broner and Floyd Mayweather. This match-up immediately came to mind once Adrien Broner announced he would be entering the welterweight limit and challenging Paulie Malignaggi for his belt.

I recall seeing Max Kellerman earlier this year on the Dan Lebatard show saying that in the next 2 years Adrien “The Problem” Broner is going to be a problem match up for Floyd Mayweather although he doubts they would ever fight because they are close buds.  After watching Broner’s poor performance against Malignaggi, in which he won via split decision, and then also seeing countless interviews from Broner and Mayweather, I still believe this fight will eventually happen and here are a few reasons why.

Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez vs. undefeated Martin Murray

martinez2by James Le Blanc: I have become accustomed to continuously seeing Sergio Martinez’s name go up and down in the top 10 p4p rankings and it irritates me incredibly that he has never reached number one, at least for a short period of time. Since 2010 defeating Kelly Pavlik, Sergio has dominated his opponents, he has dominated his weight class, and he has dominated the sport.

Let’s recap to solidify my argument here. After the fight with Pavlik, Sergio fought a rematch with Paul Williams who had controversially defeated him before. We remember the knockout, the vicious hook that made people worry about the well being of Paul Williams. Since that giant victory over a much feared and over-sized middleweight in Williams, Martinez went on to fight Dzinziruk.

What has happened to Women’s Boxing in the United States?

By Yoel Carratala: This is a question I continue to ask myself weekend after weekend. You’d think that with women’s boxing pioneers like Christy Martin, Mia St. John, Lucia Rijker and Laila Ali all receiving mainstream attention in the 1990’s; the sport would have achieved more glory than it has in recent years. Their was even a major movie produced, “Million Dollar Baby” which featured Lucia Rijker.

Donaire-Rigondeaux: No Jab, No excuse

donaire888By James Le Blanc: Let me start by saying I am a big fan of Nonito Donaire. As someone from the Bay Area I make it a point to follow all boxers that come from that area. I also must say I was very disappointed with Nonito’s performance but if you are a fan of boxing and you have a number of favorite fighters, soon enough you will see them lose. What bothered me the most regarding this past weekend’s bout at New York’s Radio City Music Hall was the post fight interview and since.

A number of excuses came out of either Nonito’s mouth or his promoter’s mouth which ranged from trouble making weight, shoulder injury, overlooking Rigo, not watching tape on Rigo, not adjusting mid fight, and most importantly not using the jab.

The best/worst thing since the Super Six and Bantamweight Tournament

garcia43By James Le Blanc: Golden Boy has announced they will be holding a 4 man tournament at 140 pounds consisting of Zab Judah vs. Danny Garcia and Lamont Peterson vs. Lucas Matthysse. The winners will fight each other and then the ultimate winner of the tournament will more than likely face Amir Khan.  Amir Khan is in the process of returning to 140lb supremacy after losing a controversial decision to Peterson and then a 4th round knockout loss to Danny Garcia. People have different takes on the Super Six tournament. One thing we know about the tournament is that it left out title holder Lucian Bute for some reason.

Bute is arguably not one of the best Super middleweights as Carl Froch made easy work of him post tournament. And then there were a number of fighters that backed out of fights and needed last minute replacements to ensure the tournament went on.

Andre Ward’s options to break out as super star

ward324By James Le Blanc: Despite Floyd Mayweather’s distasteful comments on Andre Ward’s nickname and his inability to fill seats, Andre sits at #2 P4P and arguably #1 as the only American Champion to have captured the Gold in the 2004 Olympics and come out blemish free from the Super Six World Boxing Classic hosted by Showtime that had the top Super middle weights in the world participating.

While Ward has beat the likes of Mikkel Kessler, Carl Froch, Arthur Abraham, and Chad Dawson via KO in 2012 he is still criticized by some for not being that brash stand out personality that can draw the crowds to watch.

Scenario not so farfetched…..

broner3By James Le Blanc IV: What if I asked you who you thought would win out of a fight between big brother Floyd Mayweather and little brother Adrien Broner? We haven’t even considered this being a possibility but as I look at the landscape of what’s been going on for both Mayweather and Broner, I’m not so sure this is a farfetched scenario. Let’s start with Floyd Mayweather’s landscape.

He just signed a 6 fight deal with Showtime with no clear opponent for September (If you remember Floyd has committed to a date in September and the opponent apparently will not be the presumed Canelo Alvarez). Other than Canelo there are a few names being thrown out there. We know it will not be Pacqauio who must avenge his losses and even when he does the Top Rank and Golden Boy feud will not allow that to happen.
