The best/worst thing since the Super Six and Bantamweight Tournament

garcia43By James Le Blanc: Golden Boy has announced they will be holding a 4 man tournament at 140 pounds consisting of Zab Judah vs. Danny Garcia and Lamont Peterson vs. Lucas Matthysse. The winners will fight each other and then the ultimate winner of the tournament will more than likely face Amir Khan.  Amir Khan is in the process of returning to 140lb supremacy after losing a controversial decision to Peterson and then a 4th round knockout loss to Danny Garcia. People have different takes on the Super Six tournament. One thing we know about the tournament is that it left out title holder Lucian Bute for some reason.

Bute is arguably not one of the best Super middleweights as Carl Froch made easy work of him post tournament. And then there were a number of fighters that backed out of fights and needed last minute replacements to ensure the tournament went on.  Jermain Taylor left after only the first round in which he suffered a 12rd ko loss at the hands of Arthur Abraham.  Later we saw Andre Dirrell exit and then Mikkel Kessler who claimed he had trouble seeing right before driving off in his car wearing sun glasses. Whether these fighters left for good reason or not I think Showtime did a good job of replacing them with somewhat quality opponents and letting the show continue.  Andre Ward came out the victor and was undefeated throughout the tournament leaving no doubt in any ones minds who the best super middleweight in the world was.

The bantamweight tournament was a joke because it did not have Nonito Donaire in it who was obviously the best Bantamweight out there. The attempt to match him with Mares the winner of the tournament fell apart due to the promotional feud.

Now we have this 4 man tournament at Junior Welterweight with intriguing opponents and incredible match making in the works. Best case scenario is after this tournament the winner is matched with khan and the winner of that fight is crowned the best at 140. Other scenarios involve a number of different issues to occur which are all issues we saw in the super six. These issues include Injuries, fighters backing out, poor judging, and Amir Khan losing taking away from the post tournament encore. This is boxing and unfortunately we should expect some of the worst case scenarios. I think tournaments are good for the sport, they match the best with the best but in this sport there are always snares that take away.  Hopefully we see the best case scenario. I haven’t bothered to mention Brandon Rios because with HBO’s recent move we now have two separate boxing entities and should no longer even bother speaking about possible match ups of fighters from Golden Boy and Top Rank.
