Has Kell Brook’s big fight fallen on his lap?

brook6By Gav Duthie: After dispatching of two mandatories in the last year (Jo Jo Dan, Bizier) that Kell Brook could have beaten on the same night he now has a real live danger in front of him with newly instated mandatory challenger Errol Spence Jnr 20-0 (17).

After failing to secure a fight with Amir Khan, Kell Brook’s promoter Eddie Hearn has stated he is negotiating with Miguel Cotto, Danny Garcia, Manny Pacquiao, Adrien Broner, Tim Bradley and Jessie Vargas but a bout against rising star Spence might be the best option. Is this the fight Brook has been looking for or is the risk greater than the reward.

Mandatory

Brook has made 3 defences of his title with two of them coming against IBF mandatory challengers.

Make or break year for George Groves

groves7777By Gav Duthie: It seems almost bizarre that ‘Saint’ George Groves picked up only his 23rd career win on Saturday night against Scot David Brophy 16-1-1 (1). Groves seems to have been around for so long that it is easily forgotten he was a relative novice when he faced Carl Froch in Manchester, late 2013. Besides those fights gaining him lots of money and recognition they derailed his career as a world champion. After another straight forward win against B-level opposition I ask is this now time for Groves 23-3 (18) to win his title or is he simply not good enough at the highest level.

The next path

Groves promoters Sauerland have given a sneak preview of their plans on Saturday night by securing the bout to be sanctioned for the vacant WBA International title.

What’s next after last Saturday night

1-WardBarrera_Hoganphotos3By Gav Duthie: There was quite an interesting night of boxing on Saturday night with action in the UK and US. Its been a relatively quiet March and although my interest was registered last night all of the fights were predictable in their outcomes. The question is what next for these talents.

Chris Eubank Jnr

25 years on from his father unwittingly putting Michael Watson in a coma his son has done the same thing. Eubank Jnr has wished his opponent Nick Blackwell a speedy recovery as he is in an induced coma to reduce swelling for bleeding in his skull. Our thoughts are with Nick and his family.

The Best British fights we never saw

calzaghe445574By Gav Duthie: After another top performance by Kell Brook questions were regarding who he fights next. Amir Khan is out for the time being as he faces Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and there is a good chance we will never see this fight. Here are some of the other British contests we missed out on over the years.

Ricky Hatton v Junior Witter

Some fights you hope can be made, this one should have been made. On occasion fans are looking for one fighter to move up a weight class (E.g McCullouch to fight Hamed) or take a fight early in their career when they may not be ready (Groves v Froch) but this fight was simple. There was a time when Hatton and Witter could have fought in a unification bout at light welterweight.

Whats ‘Super’ about the WBA?

fury8233By Gav Duthie: Long gone are the days when we simply had 1 world champion per division. When ‘Homicide Hank’ Henry Armstrong completed a hat-trick of titles becoming featherweight, lightweight and welterweight champion in 1938 he possessed 3/8 titles available across the entire sport. Now the WBA has 42 champions across 17 weight divisions. This doesn’t include the WBC, WBO and IBF as well as lesser titles like the IBO. Boxing has evolved, not necessarily for the better but for quite sometime we have accepted 4 champions per division but the WBA are really starting to stretch the boundaries to unacceptable levels.

Why we won’t see Golovkin-Saunders

golovkinBy Gav Duthie: In a brief conversation involving Steve ‘Big Daddy’ Bunce and Frank Warren before the Flanagan-Matthews title fight the latter admitted that Billy Joe Saunders wanted to fight Gennady Golovkin next.

Last week it was announced that that Saunders will make a voluntary defence against Max Bursak for his newly acquired WBO middleweight title. Bursak is a solid fighter with good experience but is certainly not a name that will excite the fans.

Big fight time for Braehmer

braehmer5By Gav Duthie: Another night, another routine defence for Jurgen Braehmer now 48-2 (35). Braehmer beat Eduard Gutknecht by a 12 round unanimous decision last Saturday night in Germany. At age 37 you need to ask the question what does he want for the rest of his career.

This was the 6th successful defence of his WBA regular title, where Sergiy Kovalev owns the full title. This is the second spell the German has had with this title. It reminds me of the reign of Sven Ottke where he was content to defend his titles at home make decent money against average fighters as opposed to testing himself in major unification bouts, top contenders or big money bouts. If Braehmer does decide to step out of his comfort zone.

The heavyweight division has everything right now

1-deontay-wilder (6)By Gav Duthie: Its arguably taken 20 years but the heavyweight division, the fulcrum of boxing, is something to get excited about again. It has been two decades since the all American showdown between Evander Holyfield and Mike Tyson (Nov 1996) which put Evander at the sports summit.

Heavyweights have always been the torch bearers of boxing and with todays popularity of UFC the resurgence of heavyweights can help boxing immensely. Since the Tyson era the division has been dominated by three people, Lennox Lewis and the Klitschko brothers, Vitaly and Wladimir which has lead to disenchantment with the heavy hitters.

Unlike many I’m a fan of all 3 but in any sport if one person/team dominates for too long it becomes stale. Fans need the unexpected, 50/50 fights, knockout artists, slugfests and rivalries and I think we are at the start of something great. The talent may not be the same as the 90s but the similarities are there.

Time to face the ‘Real Jackal’

rigondeaux5By Gav Duthie: Cuban artist Guillermo Rigondeaux 16-0 (10) must realize that time is not on his side as he approaches a pivotal point in his career. Undoubtedly one of boxing biggest talents there is a concern that Rigo will not be allowed to fulfil that potential. Roc Nation is the latest in a long list of promoters who have managed Rigo, but at 35 years old will he ever get his career defining fight.

His treatment is an embarrassment to the sport. Last year the Super Bantamweight division was mouth watering with Leo Santa Cruz WBC, Guillermo Rigondeaux WBA Super and WBO, Scott Quigg WBA regular and Carl Frampton IBF all in contention for big unification fights. Now the champions are Hugo Ruiz WBC, Carl Frampton WBA and IBF and Nonito Donaire WBO.

Rigo doesn’t even have a belt despite never losing in the ring. It is now a much poorer list of champions as Santa Cruz ran up to 126, Donaire ran back down and Ruiz having the WBC is just as shambolic as was Julio Ceja before him.

Can we live without Kovalev v Stevenson?

kovalev-pascal2 (3)By Gav Duthie: Words exchanged, sparks flew as Adonis ‘Chickenson’ Stevenson retorts at his new nickname expressing “I’m the real champ” as he postures across the ring in a vein attempt to get to unified champion Sergey ‘Krusher’ Kovalev after the Russian had destroyed Stevenson’s compatriot Jean Pascal for the second time.

Was anybody buying it? Does anyone even care? A unification bout between the talented duo should be the next biggest fight in boxing but are we resigned to it not happening? Boxing doesn’t need another 5 year drawn out tit for tat negotiation like Floud Mayweather v Manny Pacquiao especially as UFC gains more fans with its format of the best fighting the best without exception.
