Is it really in Bellew’s best interest to fight Huck this year?

huck453By Daven: For those who missed it, Tony the “bomber” Bellew emerged victorious on Saturday night against Valery Brudov. Barring one round which was the seventh the Liverpool native put in a measured performance. Moreover the power that had abandoned him at Light-heavyweight has seemingly returned. Despite securing two knock downs and then the knockout in the final round, it’s integral Bellew gets at least two fights in before going for a world title.

After the fight Eddie Hearn called out Marco huck who is widely regarded as the best cruiserwight on the planet. His most notable wins are over Afalobi who is already being avoided by Bellew so how Matchroom think Bellew is ready to fight somebody like Huck is beyond me. Yes, I am aware it would be for a world title but Huck’s arsenal is too skilful for Bellew meaning Bellew cannot outbox him and moreover Huck has a very good chin so Tony’s apparent power will not be a factor.

Andre Ward sitting on the sidelines

ward5636By Daven: Andre “SOG” Ward (27-0, 14 KO’s) is clearly the number 2 pound-for-pound boxer in the world, yet his purse for his last bout equated to a mere $2,000,000. This may sound like a decent amount but when people take into consideration that Floyd Mayweather Jr. netted over $40,000,000 for beating up Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. The figures don’t correlate. Andre is the second best boxer in the world and normally in any profession the second best gets paid handsomely.

The numbers from their last fights suggest that Ward is twenty times inferior than Mayweather as a boxer and that is simply ludicrous. I personally regard Ward as a very close second in the Pound for Pound list, as he has outclassed greater competition than Mayweather. The likes of Mikkel Kessler, Arthur Abraham, Carl Froch and Chad Dawson were all in their primes when they faced Ward and all own trademark victories over other top contenders. Do the likes of Robert Guerrero, Victor Ortiz or Canelo have the same status as the aforementioned above? No they do not to be frank.

Martin Murray to sign with Matchroom within the month

murray66By Daven: It really was a strange 2013 for two time world middleweight challenger Martin Murray (26-1-1, 11 KO’s). The year started as promising as he could have hoped for. Taking Sergio Martinez to the scorecards in the most hostile of territories is no easy feat; Matthew Macklin and Darren Barker can testify to that and they fought him in USA. Moreover Murray knocked down Sergio three times yet the judges scorecards seemed to ignore this sensational accomplishment, nonetheless Murray’s performance was probably the finest of all British boxers in 2013 when faced with foreign opposition.

One would assume Hatton promotions would have struck whilst the iron was hot following the Argentine affair but this did not occur. For whatever reason several crucial fights fell through. A fight with Garth Wood was made official only for the fight to be scrapped through no fault of Murray’s.

The Kell Brook problem

By Daven: Having watched welterweight contender Kell Brook fight many times on Sky Sports one can clearly see the guy is special. (no pun intended) However his fan base is mainly comprised of people from Sheffield and hardcore boxing fans within Britain. This basically means he is no position to call out Amir Khan; a man synonymous with British boxing whether you like him or not.
