Tony Bellew Backs Odel Kamara Before First Bell

By Boxing News 24 Desk - 10/02/2026 - Comments

Tony Bellew is calling Matchroom’s new signing Odel Kamara a future world champion before his professional debut. Having watched him as an amateur, I don’t see the punching power to share that confidence yet.

Kamara looks athletic and moves well, but what happens when an opponent walks through his punches and keeps coming? That’s what I want to see before joining Bellew in talking about world titles.

Bellew praises Kamara’s athleticism, but his recorded amateur results give little indication of a big puncher. BoxRec lists just one stoppage among his 21 wins. That fits what I’ve seen of him: a fighter who relies on movement and boxing ability rather than power. If professional opponents can keep coming through his punches, he’ll have to show he can cope with that pressure before the world-title talk looks justified.

At 5’8″, Kamara would also be giving away height to many opponents at junior middleweight. That makes the power question harder to ignore. Against taller fighters who can box, he may have to come forward to get within punching range, rather than rely on opponents chasing him. If his punches don’t discourage them, winning those exchanges could become difficult. His movement looks good, but he’ll need to show he can get inside and do something once he gets there.

Bellew praised the World Championship bronze medalist ahead of his debut on the Ben Whittaker–Conor Wallace card in Birmingham.

“He’s one of the ones I’ve been very, very excited about going pro,” Bellew said during Matchroom’s broadcast. “I just think he has so much ability. His athleticism is off the Richter scale. This boy’s good going forward, going backwards.”

Bellew also praised trainer Tony Sims and finished by declaring that Kamara would become a world champion if everything was handled correctly.

That last qualification leaves plenty of room for matchmaking. Eddie Hearn can choose opponents who give Kamara space to show his speed and movement, building his reputation without putting him against someone capable of exposing his weaknesses.

We heard plenty of enthusiasm from Bellew about Conor Benn, too. I’m skeptical of another round of world-title talk before the difficult professional fights have even started. Bellew works on DAZN’s Matchroom broadcasts, and readers should have that context when assessing his endorsement.

Kamara’s bronze medal deserves respect. Losing at the World Championships doesn’t mean he cannot succeed professionally, but winning a medal doesn’t settle questions about his power either.

Hearn has a fresh fighter to promote, and Kamara could become an attraction in the UK with the right opponents and television exposure. Whether he can beat world-class professionals is another question.

For now, I’d rather see how he handles someone who refuses to give him room than hear what belt Bellew expects him to win.
