Jermall Charlo is promising a final run at a world title, but his October 17 opponent offers little indication of how he would handle the best super middleweights. Koen Mazoudier is moving up from junior middleweight with a 16-4-1 record and just six knockouts.
“October 17 We Back To Business,” Charlo posted on Instagram on Thursday ahead of their Las Vegas fight.
The matchmaking resembles his November 2023 return against Jose Benavidez Jr., another opponent who had competed at lower weights. Charlo won that fight, then disappeared until his May 2025 stoppage of Thomas LaManna. He has completed only two bouts since June 2021.
Mazoudier gives him an opportunity to work off rust, but beating a fighter moving up two divisions would leave questions about Charlo’s punch resistance, legs, and conditioning against established 168-pound opposition.
“Because this is the last one. This the last run,” Charlo said during a media call. “I’m putting all my effort into it. You know, I’m just giving it my all, and if God wants me to keep going, I’ll keep going. But at this point, I don’t have nothing to prove.”
At 36, Charlo has limited time to turn that promise into a serious title challenge. Christian Mbilli and Osleys Iglesias would ask far more of him than a smaller opponent with a modest knockout record. Charlo needs to establish whether he can sustain his boxing under pressure from men accustomed to fighting at this weight.
His place on the Sebastian Fundora–Ermal Hadribeaj undercard also puts this return away from the headline position he once occupied. That alone does not prove promoters have lost confidence in him, but another win followed by a lengthy absence would make it harder to build demand for a major fight.
Charlo said planned fights fell through this year and wants another appearance before December ends. Following through would make his final-run claim more credible. Beating Mazoudier and waiting another year would leave him selling the same comeback story again.
