Frank Smith Backs Odel Kamara To Reach Top

By Boxing News 24 Desk - 10/05/2026 - Comments

Frank Smith believes Odel Kamara can reach the top of boxing, but the 22-year-old’s debut against Thodoris Ritzakis offered reasons to question that projection. His punching technique and apparent physical limitations make the leading fighters at 154 look a long way beyond him.

“He can go to the very top of the sport,” Smith told talkSPORT. “He’s just 22 years old. And I think what we’re seeing now is a lot of fighters turning over a lot younger in their careers, not staying in the amateurs for too long. And I think that happened too often, maybe over the last sort of 10, 15 years or so.”

Kamara halted Ritzakis on Saturday night, but his habit of loading up from the bleachers creates massive defensive red flags. He threw his entire upper body into every delivery to manufacture power, lunging forward with wide arcs. That reckless aggression from Kamara overwhelmed the novice, Ritzakis, but a skilled counterpuncher would simply time the looping shots, slip inside, and tag his exposed chin before his feet ever reset.

The excessive labor behind Kamara’s offense remains a glaring problem. Natural punchers generate concussive force through tight, compact mechanics and sudden snap. Kamara strains for leverage, hurling himself into right hands and leaving himself defenseless whenever an opponent smothers his extension or makes him miss clean.

That wild output also threatens his gas tank. Emptying the tank on maximum effort haymakers drains stamina fast, and a brief early stoppage proves nothing about his engine under deep waters. Solid opposition will make Kamara fight in retreat, forcing him to expend energy on defense while desperately trying to detonate those same wide swings.

Pitting Kamara against the elite at 154 pounds exposes the promotional spin for what it is. Jaron Ennis, Vergil Ortiz Jr., and Sebastian Fundora possess lethal finishing ability, relentless punch output, and seasoned ring intelligence. Kamara showed zero traits suggesting he belongs anywhere near that bracket. He lacks a true junior middleweight frame, his power requires a massive windup instead of sudden leverage, and his wild output guarantees his gas tank empties early against durable operators.

Time remains on Kamara’s side at 22, but protective matchmaking can only mask mechanical flaws for so long. Matchroom could orchestrate an undefeated run against handpicked domestic opposition and eventually steer him into an alphabet title shot against a paper champion.

Collecting a vacant strap will never fool sharp eyes into believing Kamara reached elite status. Frank Smith is selling dreams, but Kamara’s debut provided zero proof that he can compete at the highest level.
