Daniel Dubois Talks Legacy Before Finishing Wardley Business

By Boxing News 24 Desk - 10/05/2026 - Comments

Daniel Dubois expects a smoother win over Fabio Wardley on October 17, but his talk of becoming a heavyweight legend runs ahead of what he has established. Wardley dropped him twice in their first fight, giving the challenger good reason to believe the rematch can end differently.

“Even better and even smoother than last time,” Dubois told Queensberry.

“I feel like I’ve improved and, having been the champion, I’ve improved double. That’s some boxing history I’ve got—a two-time world champion—and now I need to go down as a legend.”

Dubois earned credit for recovering to stop Wardley in the 11th round in May. That showed toughness, stamina, and the power to turn a dangerous fight around. It also showed that Wardley can put him on the floor. Claiming substantial improvement is easy; showing how he will prevent Fabio from landing those damaging punches is the test.

The wins over Jarrell Miller and Filip Hrgovic required Dubois to work through difficult stretches, too. Joe Joyce stopped him, and Oleksandr Usyk beat him twice inside the distance. Those results do not erase his achievements, but they give little support to the idea that beating Wardley once makes the return fight straightforward.

His knockout of Anthony Joshua remains his biggest-name victory. Still, Joshua’s vulnerability to heavy punches limits how much that performance tells us about Dubois against the other leading heavyweights. Flattening Joshua did not translate into solving Usyk.

Dubois has a decent chin, but shots he does not see coming can hurt him. Wardley already knows he has the power to exploit that vulnerability, and he does not need to win every round to threaten the champion. Dubois needs to beat Wardley again, then pursue the other champions.

Unification victories and successful defenses would build the record behind his ambition. Right now, he is discussing his place in heavyweight history while preparing to face a man who nearly ended his latest title run before it began.
