The WBA-ordered challenger questioned why Romero would pursue a voluntary defense instead of their mandated fight
Jack Catterall has criticized reports that WBA welterweight champion Rolly Romero could pursue a voluntary title defense before facing him. The reaction comes weeks after the WBA ordered the two fighters to begin negotiations for a welterweight title fight.
Rolly is expected to defend his title this summer, although a “tough fight” is not anticipated for his first appearance since defeating Ryan Garcia in May 2025. Catterall quickly responded on social media.
Pathetic ! What are you waiting for @SignUp4KOs ? When you do have this ridiculous run out don’t be vacating 🦆 https://t.co/GKfzesNJpm

The comments come after the WBA ordered Romero and Catterall to begin negotiations for a fight within 180 days.
Romero has not defended the WBA welterweight title since defeating Ryan more than a year ago, a reign now exceeding 12 months.
Former mandatory challenger Shakhram Giyasov eventually moved on after waiting for his title opportunity and instead faced Catterall on the May 23 “Glory in Giza” card held at the pyramids in Egypt.
Catterall defeated Giyasov by unanimous decision over 12 rounds at the Pyramids of Giza to capture the WBA’s secondary welterweight title and improve his position in the sanctioning body’s rankings.
Following that victory, the WBA ordered Rolly and Catterall to negotiate a bout, potentially setting up a title consolidation fight at welterweight.
Catterall appears frustrated by reports suggesting Rolly could take a voluntary defense before facing him. The ordered bout would give Catterall his first opportunity to challenge for the WBA’s primary welterweight championship at 147 pounds as a professional.
