Richardson Hitchins speaks like a fighter already carrying the sport, calling himself a generational talent ahead of a title defense that is on the undercard of Ryan Garcia and Mario Barrios on the February 21 pay-per-view. The confidence is unmistakable. Proving it against Oscar Duarte is the harder assignment.
Hitchins defends his IBF junior welterweight title against Duarte, a pressure fighter who specializes in making lives miserable. Duarte moves forward, lets his hands go, and stays in your chest regardless of how the rounds are scored.
Titles amplify confidence. Opponents test it.
The Brooklyn native claims he’ll meet that aggression head on and give Duarte the war he’s looking for. Saying that is the easy part. Doing it is where things get difficult.
Duarte is a different animal than George Kambosos Jr., who Hitchins beat last year. He’s stronger, carries more power, and is willing to take two shots just to land one big hook. It’s a style Hitchins knows well. Gustavo Lemos brought that same heat in 2024 and pushed Hitchins to the absolute limit in a split decision that fans still argue about today.
“Osar Duarte is going to come tough. He’s a crazy man. So, he’s going to come to fight. So, I’m going to give him what he’s looking for. It’s going to be a fun night off boxing,” Hitchins told Fighthype when discussing the defense.
Hitchins Must Back Up The Talk Against Oscar Duarte
Nobody ever questions Hitchins’ skill. The real question is what happens when that skill can’t create enough distance. Against Lemos, he could never quite escape the pressure, and the fight stayed uncomfortably close until the final bell.
We saw that same story play out in December 2024. Hitchins beat Liam Paro by split decision to grab the IBF belt, but it was another night where he couldn’t quite separate himself from the pack.
Duarte is sitting right at the top of the IBF rankings, and he doesn’t get discouraged by a stiff jab. For a champion who already deals with plenty of critics, another narrow win won’t silence anyone.
Hitchins is calling this fight as a gift to the fans. He calls Duarte a “crazy man” and promises a night of action instead of a tactical chess match. It’s a risky move if he wants to prove he’s levels above the rest of the division.
This defense isn’t just about keeping the belt. It’s about answering the doubts that started with Lemos and followed him through the Paro fight. A dominant win finally backs up the talk. Anything less suggests his reputation is still running ahead of his results.
