Brandon Figueroa stopped Nick Ball in the twelfth round to capture the WBA featherweight title, closing a competitive fight with a late finish. The knockout handed Ball the first defeat of his career and reshaped the division’s title picture.
Ball, fighting on home turf, stayed composed in a competitive battle, catching Figueroa’s advance with tight counters inside and showing a willingness to exchange in close. As the rounds accumulated, Figueroa raised his work rate, dug to the body, fired the left, and shifted stances to disrupt Ball’s timing.
The middle rounds stayed close with both men landing clean. Ball capitalized when he caught Figueroa stepping forward, yet Figueroa kept the pressure, driving the fight and stacking punches. Entering the championship rounds, the outcome remained in the balance. Ball held firm, though the heavier and steadier shots were coming his way.
Twelfth-Round Stoppage Decides Featherweight Title
The finish came early in the twelfth round. Figueroa landed a left hand to the chin that dropped Ball for a count. Ball rose, but Figueroa followed immediately with a sustained attack that sent Ball back through the ropes, prompting referee Steve Gray to wave the bout off at 0:32 of the round. The stoppage handed Ball the first loss of his professional career and crowned Figueroa the new WBA featherweight champion.
In the co-feature, WBC Silver bantamweight champion Andrew Cain recovered from adversity to stop Alejandro Gonzalez in the ninth round of a final eliminator. WBA International super flyweight champion Jack Turner stopped Juan Carlos Martinez Urbina after three rounds of a scheduled ten-round bout. Martinez Urbina was dropped late in the first round and absorbed steady pressure before quitting on his stool at the end of the third.
Former European super bantamweight champion Brad Strand forced a third-round corner stoppage against Ruben Lezama Gonzalez. Strand drew blood from Gonzalez’s nose in the second round and finished matters with sustained body attacks early in the third.
