Tank Davis on the Move: Ellerbe Hints at Fight Announcement Soon

Leonard Ellerbe of Mayweather Promotions says WBA ‘regular’ lightweight champion Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis will be fighting soon, and they’ll have an announcement when that happens.

Tank’s Choice, Tank’s Time

“Tank is going to decide who he’s fighting, and when he decides that, he’ll make an announcement. Tank’s the boss, and he’ll be fighting soon,” said Ellerbe to Fighthype about Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis to be fighting soon.

It’s been nine months since Gervonta last fought in April 2023, and it’s safe to say that he won’t be fighting in the next three months, meaning that he’ll have let a year fly by between fights. That’s not ideal if you’re trying to keep your ‘Face of Boxing spot.

It’s been rumored that Tank will be fighting Frank Martin next, but Ellerbe didn’t sound enthused when his name was mentioned yesterday as a potential opponent for him.

Assuming Tank won’t be fighting Martin, who would it be? Isaac Cruz is already scheduled to face Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero, and Vasily Lomachenko is taking on Maxi Hughes.

If Tank is going to fight one of the contenders in the World Boxing Association’s rankings, these would be the options:

Edwin De Los Santos
Floyd Schofield
Jose ‘Rayo’ Valenzuela
Chann Thonson
Fradmil Macayo
Albert Batyrgaziev
Zaur Abdullaev
Gary Cully
Roger Gutierrez
Lucas Bahdi
Justin Pauldo
Andy Cruz

Valenzuela: The Fan-Friendly Option?

Rayo Valenzuela (13-2, 9 KOs) would seem to be the best option out of all those fighters because he has a fan base and is coming off a big sixth-round knockout win over Chris Colbert last December.

If Tank wants an opponent who will keep fans interested while also being someone he can beat, Valenzuela would be the ideal option. Davis won’t fight Edwin De Los Santos because he’s too dangerous and would wear him out.

Frank Martin Dismissed

“Frank Martin can’t beat ‘Tank’ Davis. None of them guys can beat ‘Tank’ Davis. So, I wouldn’t use the word ‘live dog.’ Frank’s a good a** fighter, but he can’t beat Tank, though,” said Ellerbe.
