Matias Challenges Bill Haney: “Make the Unification Happen”

Subriel Matias is calling for Bill Haney, Devin’s dad, to set up a unification fight now that he’s signed with Matchroom Boxing.

The IBF light welterweight champion Matias (20-1, 20 KOs) feels there’s nothing preventing a fight between him and WBC champ Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) from meeting once the two win their next fights.

Ticking Clock for Haney at 140

Haney is defending his title against Ryan Garcia on April 20th, but if he wins that fight, he’ll be free to face Matias for a unification at 140.

That’s if Haney stays at 140 because he’s already outgrowing the division after just one fight, reportedly rehydrating to 165 lbs for his first match in the division last December against Regis Prograis.

Promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom is believed to have an ambitious five-fight plan for Matias, with one of the fights being a big one.

It would be better for the fans that Hearn make the fight with Haney being the next one because he can’t afford to wait until Matias’ fifth one with Matchroom. By that time, Haney will likely have outgrown the 140-lb division and will be fighting at 147 or 154.

As fast as Haney is growing, he’ll soon be super middleweight, and it’ll be too late for a fight between him and Matias to happen. You see how big his dad, Bill, is. That’s where Devin is going to end up soon, looking like a light heavyweight.

“Put Your Son In”

“Now that we’re both with Matchroom, he can put his son so we can fight,” said Subriel Matias to MillCity Boxing about his message to Bill Haney on wanting to face Devin Haney in a unification clash now that he’s signed with Matchroom.

The calculated manner in which Bill chooses opponents for Devin, it’s impossible to see him agreeing to take a live fighter like Matias, who wreck Dev’s world by knocking him out, and putting a stop to the gravy train.

Hitchins: Hold Your Horses

“April 6th, Gustavo Lemos and Richardson Hitchins. That’s my first focus. After that, y’all come back and ask me about Subriel Matias,” said #3 IBF Richardson Hitchins to the media.
