Promoter Eddie Hearn says he’ll make an offer to Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis today to fight welterweight Conor Benn in a “huge fight,” likely in the U.S. in April or May.
Hearn says he likes the size advantage Benn (23-0, 14 KOs) will have in the fight with the smaller Tank Davis, a natural super featherweight [130], and coming up in weight from the lightweight division to face Conor at 147.
Benn rehydrated to 170 lbs for his fight against Peter Dobson at junior middleweight last Saturday night on February 3rd, so there’s a good chance he’ll be at a similar weight for the Tank Davis clash if it gets made.
Massive Weight Jump for Tank
“Obviously, the whole world is calling out Conor Benn, and we have to land him one of those big fights,” said Eddie Hearn to Matchroom Boxing about his intention to match Conor Benn against a big name for his next fight.
“He’s [Gervonta] has never fought at 147, but it’s a really tough fight for Conor Benn. I like the size advantage in that fight [for Benn]. It’ll be the first time in the last couple of fights that he’ll be fighting someone smaller than him,” said Hearn.
“I think Gervonta Davis vs Conor Benn is a fight that can really light up America and the UK. I spoke to Gervonta Davis personally, and he’ll be receiving an offer from us today for that fight. It’s a huge fight. It could happen in the UK, but we’re looking at America for that.”
It will take a significant offer from Matchroom promoter Hearn to get Tank Davis and his management at PBC to accept this clash because he’s coming off a successful PPV mega-fight against Ryan Garcia last April.
Cash Out for Benn
Tank can make good money fighting U.S. fighters Ryan, Devin Haney, Vasily Lomachenko, or Shakur Stevenson and likely do better numbers than fighting Benn, who is not a household name in the States.
This fight works well for Benn and Hearn because it gives them a big name. The belief fans have is that Hearn is in a hurry to cash out on a mega-fight for Benn before he’s exposed as a fake fighter with no true ability and is just another example of a fighter living off the name of his famous father.
