Canelo’s Next Fight: Hearn Touts Options, Downplays Charlo Clash

Eddie Hearn says he doesn’t like Jermall Charlo for Canelo Alvarez’s next fight on May 4th, believing it won’t do the numbers that the Mexican star did against Jermell last September.

Instead of Charlo, Hearn wants Canelo (60-2-2, 39 KOs) to defend his undisputed super middleweight championship against one of these fighters:

  • Edgar Berlanga
  • David Benavidez
  • Jaime Munguia
  • Terence Crawford

Hearn would like Canelo to fight his fighter, Berlanga (21-0, 16 KOs), if he’s victorious in his February 24th match against Padraig McCrory. He believes a fight between Canelo and Berlanga would bring in fans on the West Coast in San Diego and in New York at Madison Square Garden.

Open to Business

“He’ll fight anybody, and he’s also a businessman at the same time,” said Eddie Hearn to Fighthype, talking about Canelo Alvarez. “Crawford is such a great fighter. It’s definitely a fight that people are going to be intrigued with.

If Canelo is going to fight Crawford, he’ll need to let him know soon because there are only three months to go before his May 4th date. Crawford will need time to bulk up to 168 so he’s not overmatched like Jermell.

“I think the Munguia fight is a great fight, I really do. I think the Benavidez fight is also a great fight, and also, I want my man, Edgar Berlanga, to do a really good job on February 24th and scream and shout and call that fight [Canelo] as well.”

Charlo Fight Not Favored

“All of a sudden if you’re Canelo Alvarez, you have options. You have Munguia. You have Berlanga. You have Benavidez and you have Crawford. So, you’ve got another two years secure in the schedule.

“I just don’t like the [Jermall] Charlo fight [for Canelo]. It doesn’t do numbers like the first fight against the other brother. The fight [against Jermell last September] was a non-event, and Charlo has been out for two years.

“Benavidez-Canelo is a huge fight. So, is Munguia-Canelo. That’s a really fun fight. You’ve got a young fresh Mexican that will do everything to win against a pound-for-pound great Mexcian [Canelo]. Probably the greatest Mexican fighter of all time.

“Edgar [Berlanga] has got to make a statement on February 24th, but at the same time, Puerto vs. Mexico, sells out any venue on the west coast, particularly down in San Diego. It also sells out Madison Square Garden in the big room.”
